Hi. I have a windows xp media center edition 2002 computer.
I have a sigmatel stac 92xx c-major hd audio sound card with the most recent drivers.

Intel 2.0 GHZ Dual Core Processer
    1gig Dual Channel Ram

The problem is any program like audacity cannot record audio played on my computer. Like listening to radio on the internet I cannot record this or any other sounds.

When using audacity i set the output and input devices to "SigMatel Audio"

In the mixer bar nothing happens whether or not I use microphone or Line in.

when trying to record in audacity all I get is a blinking bar in the wave line that doesnt move left to right like it is suposed to do. I also get a scratchy sound that is in sink with the bars blinking. This sound happens whether I have my laptop speekers on or not. if I have sound turned off on the laptop I still hear the sound through the speakers.

If anybody could help I would be gratefull
    Aaron

I'm having the same problem... I have Audacity and the sigmatel audio. I can't record anything either.

Did you ever figure it out?

I've never tried this, but, couldn't one buy a cable to input one part into the audio out, and the other into the audio in? :) PITA, but worth a shot. :p

The sigmatel is your sound card. You have set it to record using it, but it is waiting for you to plug a mic in for recording purposes.
In audacity, go to File>preferences and in the recording device, select Microsoft Sound mapper - input
    Then record your net radio.
On a side note, couldn't you podcast the radio shows you want to record?

Another way to record what plays through your sound card is to use Arial Sound Recorder I have used this to capture streamed audio.

Thanks for your help... I am actually just wanting to record music that is currently being played off a dvd in my drive. What I read on this before was telling me not to hold a mic to my speakers because the quality will go down. At this point however, I'm willing to give it a try. ...Now where is that Barbie Karaoke mic....

I tried microsoft sound mapper input. It didnt work. When I set it I clicked apply then ok. Then I opened wmp and started some music. I then presed record in audacity. Same problem pulsing static and blinking bar. So I set the source in the mixer bar to microphone instead of line in and the static went away and the bar moved right to left but didnt record anything. I then set it back to line in also no static but it didnt record either.

Also arial will not record. I tried the soundcard and the microsoft sound mapper. It just makes blank mp3s.

Also what is podcasting and how do I do it?

Truthfully.... I gave up on recording like I wanted. My theory is that there is a problem with the sigmatel sound card. I resorted to importing some similar music I wanted and taking the sound bites from it.

I could test my theory on my husbands computer, but I'm not motivated for it right now... I'll let you know if that's the problem.

Podcasting is creating recorded "shows" for people to download and listen to on their iPods.

    Good Luck!

Okay podcasts are recorded radio shows. Most radio stations do it these days you just need to check their web site for them.
You then either need itunes (if you have an ipod) or I use a cool freeware program called Juice. You simply "add" the podcast feed address as a new subscription (they're free) then check for new feeds. A list of all availbale episodes will appear and you can download which ever ones you want. Juice will setup a folder in your My Documents called My received podcasts, and thats where the mp3 files will go. From there you can listen to them in whatever way you want.
For taking audio from DVD's I use a program called DVD Audio Extractor. It's great for ripping audio of live concert dvd's etc, it even automatically breaks it down to tracks if you want or it can leave it as one big track, either mp3 or was if I recall correctly.

    Hope that helps.
