cannot renew/repair ip

I have Road Runner. The first computer is Dell Home XP. The modem and router have all the lights on. I am getting on the internet

The second computer is Compact/XP. It is not getting the internet. I keep trying to renew the ip but it says that it cannot repair.

I have done nothing with either computer for the last 4 months. This just happened yesterday.

I did have trouble with the main computer but I did the unplug-wait-plug cycle and the first computer is fine.

I don't know why this happened since nothing was changed on either computer.

I can't give any more details as I am not a computer person. Thanks in advance.

 

I did a system restore and I manually put in the ip numbers. It shows that there is a connection at 100 mb but I still get no real internet connection. This computer that I am using is just fine. It is hooked up to a linksys wireless router. ANd my computer worked for months until just last week. I don't know what else to try.

I really messed up now. I unplugged the modem and router per instructions and now I can't remember which cable goes where and 2 cables are blue.... HELP PLEASE:cry:cry

 

Cable from modem to router goes into the router's WAN port. Should be all the way to one side and marked Internet or WAN.
Cable from router to comp should be plugged into one of the ports in the center of router. Should be a grouping of 4 ports numbered 1 - 4.

 

I am looking at the modem. The blue cable from the modem goes to the router and is plugged into one of the #1 thru 4 slots...

The slot labled "internet" has a grey cable which goes to the second computer, which is not online.

If I take the blue cable from the modem and plug it into that internet slot, I lose the internet on this computer that I am on right now.

I am confused/frustrated. I appreciate you taking the time to help me.

I don't know how to get the second computer back online. IT will not renew the ip but yet it says that it is connected at 100mb. It is sending but not recieving.

There is a little yellow lock icon next to the computer icon. Does that mean anything?

have u tried to re-input a static IP after u did a Ip/renew? the reason why i ask is becuz did not state that you have a DHCP server to renew the Ip for you. check your default gateway and ip address cuz they maybe using default settings. Check the pc that is workin and make sure that the settings match. Also, maybe u need to retry setting up the internet sharing.

 

I started from the beginning. I redid every step slowly and now both computers are up and running fine. I'll never know what happened but at this point, I don't care to know. Both are working...so thanks for all your help. I appreciate that you took the time to respond. Have a great day!

Well, let's say it is working but I don't believe the wires are in the right spot. I am looking at the back of the router and ALL the wires are in the 1-4 slots. There isn't a wire in the slot that is labeled internet but both computers are working. I guess that is all that matters, aye? Thanks for your help!
