My HP Pavillion (G7 series) 500GB 64Bit laptop will NOT rip a cd on the infamous Windows Media Player but plays cd's okay. When I insert a cd, I get a message on screen as follows: [WMP cannot rip one or more tracks from the cd] My laptop crashed 6/12 and the H/drive was repaired under warranty at BestBuy. Took it back after WMP problem began & was told I had a virus (MS type??) and that my library was messed up. I do not see what the library has to do with my problem. They said I could re-load System Recovery DVD's but I would loose all my files. I have a flsh drive backup system but do not know how to save data...not even sure how it works. I've done some research & discovered the codecs may be affected & I should cosider downloading the K-lite software. However, if I have a virus, would that resolve the real problem? For security, I have malwarebytes & microsoft essentials (both free downloads). I purchased PC Registry cleaner which works very well. If anyone has experienced this problem, please advise how it was resolved. BTW, periodically the computer will shut down & restart which may indicate there is a virus hidden in my computer....don't know if this is related to my WMP issue? Should you respond to my thread, please try to keep it simple since I am a border line computer illiterate. Thanks in advance for your help/input.

Hey morrie, just head over to the Malware Forum so you can be sure or not if you have a virus, then we can work on your other problem.

After you are declared malware free, try this.

I never use WMP for anything so I can't help you with the proper codecs on that. I run VLC, which includes all the needed codecs, on the computers.

I use this program http://www.freerip.com/ (the free version).

I put the CD in, cancel out playing it and rip the tracks as mp3s so I can put them on our SanDisk Clip+ players.
As you can see looking at the 2nd link, there are other ripping options.
Try it and if it doesn't do what you wish, remove the program.
