Is there a virus which identifies which applications are antivirus programs and stops it from being saved to the HDD? I'm working on a PC (P2 333MHz, Win98 OS, 512 MB RAM, 6 GB HDD, currently using a VERY old McAfee antivirus software which hasn't been updated since 2001), and attempts to save AVG from a CD onto the HDD are unsuccessful, and yet I copy other applications from the CD to HDD. Last night I tried using TrendMicro's home visit for antivirus and it identified two virus, the Loveletter and a VBS virus. It cleaned those off, and this morning, I tried to save the AVG but still no luck. It looks like as if it saves it normally, but when I check the HDD using Windows Explorer, the file isn't there. I made sure that the View options is to show all hidden files as well. Is a reformat the only option at this point, or is there something else I can try?

There are such things as a virus that will shut down virus scan application and that will even block the ability to go to specific websites that aid in virus removal. So I guess it is possible that there is one to look for the name of the file being downloaded too. Try two things:

    1) can you download anything properly
    2) when downloading it, give a different name (if possible)

I tried saving it under an alias filename ... no good either. Tried to save it to an alias folder. No good as well. Tried to save another application (an Adobe Reader off a PC magazine disk) - that worked no problem ....

See if you can download and run these:
    McAfee Stinger Avert: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4063.html
    Avast Virus Cleaner: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4188.html
    AntiBugBear Removal Tool: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4193.html

If you can download them, run them after booting in safe mode. Here is how you boot in safe mode:
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam

Try this online scan (will not run in safe mode):

When you said you used TrendMicro's home visit, did you mean this:

By the way is your Win98 system up to date with Microsoft's Critical Updates? Don't guess, go here: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
then click Scan for updates. At a minimum get all of the Critical Updates for your OS. The other updates you may see are up to you.
