almost exactly the same problem that brookesharley is having. in post of 12/8/04

    phoenix-award bios v6.00pc
i finally learned to access the bios to enable the lpt1 port and set it up as ECP.

all tests say the lpt1 is configured correctly.
printer driver (hp620) is confirmed to be latest.
lpt1 port is OK and no conflicts.
    cable is ok.
substitued 2 other printers (HP620 and Lexmark 2030) and installed them.
same problem, starts to print to spool and then spool diappears.

HP toolkit test page not printing.

have cleared memory on 620 and printed power on test page holding in ON button, and that prints ok, so printer is working.

    30gih HD 22 gig free.

ran hwinfo registry show no conflicts.
    nothing yellowed in device mgr.
ran systems information, no conflicts irq, dma, ports

probably tried other things too, just can't remember.

You didn't mention your operating system, and this would be a help. Two things that I can think of without knowing more, 1. Your printer cable is defective. Although you can get it to print the test page holding the power on button, this is a command to the printer by the printer - holding the power on button down, but doesn't reley on computer to printer instructions. I have experienced this. 2. You don't have this printer selected as your primary printer in the printer options in control panel. I lean toward my first suggestion. :)

    OS is win98se full install.

    have replaced cables.

can probably get it set up through a usb port, but would prefer lpt1, leaving my 2 usb ports free.

SOLVED - cannot set printer in device manager

    Merry Xmas.
read a FAQ that says you install software with cable removed from printer.
apparently after installation, printer is then initialized.
    anyway, the printer works.

    thanks for any help.
