I am running xp pro on a host and client computer using a Pantech UM175 to connect with my wireless broadband. I am running a CAT5 cable from host to client and using a standard ethernet switch. I know my LAN is connected because I can see the files on the host computer from the client (but not the other way around - weird:) and it pings o.k. The "Local Area Connection" shows little or no connectivity and I cannot connect to the internet on my client computer. I have run the network setup wizard and repair but not success. Any ideas out there? Thank you for any help on this...:confused

Hi, I use a Pantech UM175 modem to connect with my wireless broadband which comes into the host computer via a USB cable. The host computer is connected to the client computer via a CAT5 cable which feeds through a standard ethernet switch. Thank you for any help you can give on this:confused

k so your modem is connected to a computer via usb? then cat5 from your nic to a switch, then from the switch to your other computer??

thats definitely a much different way of setting up a network. ive never seen that configuration before. a suggestion for you to avoid headaches later on would be to buy a home router. i dont know how familiar you are with networking, but with that, itll provide your routing from the internet to your private network which is much safer, itll provide you with switch ports for multiple computers, and dhcp which seems to be where your problem is.

the computer that has the limited or no connectivity isnt getting an address from the dhcp server its looking for. for that to work you would need to assign your computer with a static ip. im not very familiar with internet connection sharing concepts. i know what it is, i just dont know how the static ips need to be set up.

with the home router configuration, you would connect your modem into the WAN/internet port on whatever router you buy, then connect your computers to the switch ports via cat5. set your nics to dhcp and youre set.

happy to help. keep checking though, someone else might be able to better answer your specific issue. i just like to give some input if i can. im pretty sure your problem is with IP addressing though.

OH NO having the same problem here. Got one office main and computer to connect, the other I seem to be having a problem with. My opinion is that the Office main is connected via Local area connection 6 while the regular one I am trying to network is only picking up on locl area connect 2. Does anyoneone know how to delete these extra connections?

    Thanks
    Katie

hi ralphamale, since november have you had success in getting your wireless broadband to work on both computers?

I'm in the same boat. This is a "network" setup not many people can visualize due to the needs of the modem to be directly inserted in the computer and that there is not really a router involved. You can now buy a MOBILE router which is what we would need for this setup, to insert your USB modem or CARD into. price for the combo is $250+. I have seen them at Best Buy. The Geeks didn't even know what it was for when i showed it to them.

Ok, back to "our problem". accidentally i have gotten computers connected without really knowing what i did. but recently a friend gave me the 100 switch to use. usb modem into computer, ethernet into switch, and ethernet into 2nd computer. I did have to change an advanced setting on duplex to 100full changed from AUTO. on the 2nd computer.

Now my problem is the lease for the dhcp keeps expiring, cause im guessing from reading the forums that its not renewing in time. So my guess would be to assign the static ips to the router/computer #2 and #1. the modem has its own and changes daily with my provider.

What the interesting thing was that happened i never saw before was the name of the network connection ..... verizon wireless-vz access with my computers name. The network connection recognized it as a dialup connection of somesorts. If someone on here really could tell me how I got this connection, i'd appreciate it cause i have 2 more computers i'd like to add to this switch, i have had this happen now twice by accident and don't know how to do the connection on purpose.

I also need to know how to put the static ips on so i don't lose the lease on my dhcp.

thanks, btw, both laptops connected are xp, but i have a desktop to add with vista that was the first one that accidentally connected then expired on me. i want to add it again.
