    Hello guys,

The problem started with my trying to install Spyware doctor. Same day, I wanted to get rid of Spyware doctor and decided to do a System Restore on my Windows XP with SP3, I could not. Since I also detected some malware I posted the following thread in the Malware forum:

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=1447317&posted=1#post1447317

My system is clear of malware after I went through the READ ME sticky and it was confirmed by TimW at Major geeks.

Though I am able to set new system check points, but still cannot achieve System Restore. TimW advised that I post here. I do not have a Retail CD for XP.
When I try to install SR.INF it tells me to install from Cdrive.
    What should I do.
System Restore has bailed me out of trouble before and I want to have it functional.

    Thanks.

If you followed the READ ME directions to the letter, you will have disabled System Restore (one of the last instructions). When you disable system restore, it removes all restore points (a precaution in case the restore points contained copies of the malware you just got rid of).
You may have SR.INF in an i386 folder, but that won't help you get back your old restore points. Why do you need to restore? If it's just to get rid of Spyware Doctor, you might have to use one of the other methods.

    Raphee-
Here is My SR.INF. I did NOT download this off of the internet, and neither should you. INF's are often times laced with malware.

    This is for XP SP3.

The file attached is SR.txt. Rename it to SR.inf.

    Have a good day.

What error do you get when you select restore to an earlier point? That will help us determine what part of system restore is broken.

    Thanks zDAWG.

I have a sr file in the INF folder.
But I cannot install it and do not have a retail CD. When I try to install it asks for CD. Should I browse for it on my computer?
The SP3 I have is a genuine Microsoft update.

What do you suggest I should do with the sr file attachment you have sent below.

    Hi.
The error is simply that I am unable to system restore point I checked, and I should try another restore point.

I'll try to do a system restore and copy the exact words if you want.

btw, so far I have tried system restore only in normal mode. I haven't tried Safe Mode. I think you might be correct that I am missing some files. But I'm not sure.

I just tried a system restore and it showed the message below:

    Restoration Incomplete
    Date 28 Jan 2010
    checkmajor

No changes have been made to your computer

To choose another restore point restart System Restore

I liken cleaning malware out of a computer to treating cancer with radiation. Many times some system damage results from the therapy.
I usually run dialafix after removing malware. lhttp://majorgeeks.com/Dial-a-fix_d4899.htmliken
That and chkdsk /f from a command prompt.
Then, if you can borrow an install disk, from a command prompt run
sfc /scannow. But you should have an install disk.
If you can't get one, then try the instructions from this page,

    http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

I will admit that I've never tried this, because I have install disks. Perhaps someone else here could shed some light on this.
Anyway, problems are common, esp. after bad infections. And usually, by the time I get the computer, it's bad. :wave
