Just recently converted a PC from Fat32 to NTFS. Conversion went well but seems to have corrupted the Avast antivirus. Tried to uninstall Avast through Add/Remove programs and got the following message

"Buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the programs internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated."

Tried a manual uninstall, first with the programs folder and got message -

"Cannot delete ashShell.dll: Access is denied"

Ran a complete spyware and virus scan before converting to NTFS, came up with a clean machine.

    Any help will be appreciated.

Have you tried the Avast Uninstall Utility?

You can usually uninstall Avast using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. Sometimes it's not possible to uninstall Avast the standard way. In this case, you can use the Avast Uninstall Utility.

    Good Luck!

Oh anytime Kniht my pleasure, really! That Avast Uninstall Utility is certainly pretty handy in a pinch! :)

Most of the time the trouble with uninstalling many programs happens - especially antivirus programs – and a major problem can occur when a user tries to uninstall the utility or program while it's still active or running. Even though most programs give you some kind of warning to first shut down the program before continuing; sometimes they do not and the utility itself can still suffer damage to its ability to uninstall properly after that. Another problem is that some programs tell you to restart the computer and some do not. I always restart anyway – just in case.

As a precaution I make always sure to Create a System Restore Point before installing or uninstalling anything on my computer. This will allow me return the computer settings to the state your PC was in - prior to installing; should something unforeseen go wrong during the installation process.

For those reading this who may be unfamiliar with Windows System Restore:
System Restore is available in Windows Millennium (Me) and the Windows XP (Home and Professional) Operating Systems. Good Luck!
