Cannot unlock screen

    Hi,

When the screensaver of my computer turns on, and I want to continue my session, I come to the XP welcome screen. Still normal.
But when I type my password, it says it is the wrong password.
I discover also that other accounts that have no password, have one now  .
I can't do anything but rebooting. After reboot everything is normal again.
The same happens when I want to change users (fast user switching).
When I choose to not to go to the welcome screen when the screensaver turns on, everything is allright.
When I log off and then want to login again, then there is the possibility to give a password for every account (also where it is not applicable). But you can log in, by just entering (for account with no password) or giving the right password.

I've already did a full system scan for viruses (with norton) and for spyware with adaware and spybot, but nothing helps.

Sometimes, the problem is gone, but the next time I restart, it is back.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot to tell, the windows XP on that computer is reinstalled a week ago. And the problem started yesterday.

I hope someone can help me...

    Greetz,
    Hannibal

Greetings and welcome to Majorgeeks! Hopefully someone will have an answer for your question soon.

    First question.

    XP home or pro?

If Pro, is it on a domain?

Also, does this computer have sp2 and fully patched?

    It is XP-Home.

I've just reinstalled XP and it is fully updated (so also SP2).

This computer has the internet connection and it is connected to another computer. It has worked perfectly for almost 3 years.

Hi Hannibal... Welcome to Major Geeks! ;)

Until someone provides the appropriate fix, you could always entirely disable the screensaver in the meantime.

    (1) Right Click anywhere on your desktop.
    (2) Click Properties (the "Display Properties" window opens)
    (3) Click on the Screen Saver tab
    (4) Click on the Screen Saver drop down box.
    (5) Change the Screensaver to (None)
    (6) Click Apply then OK

When you want the screensaver of your choice back, simply repeat steps (1) thru (4) and then when you get to (5) choose the screensaver that you want to use and then click Apply then OK.

Side Note: I don't even use my screensaver because if I'm not working at my station I shut down the computer.

    Good Luck!

I've changed that it does not return to the welcome screen to unlock my screen and so doesn't ask for a password.

Dang it Hannibal we had someone post the same problem about three months ago, we ALL offered suggestions, but they failed!!!!! I do not know if the person posted back as to whether they solved the problem or not. if memory serves me correctly they also had the "Standby" tab greyed out, might try a search of Major Geeks "Standby Greyed out". I will try as well

I think I found something about ASP.NET at this forum (here), I can remember I installed that while updating (windows has just been reinstalled).
I will check it in the weekend, coz I'm not home this week.
