canon imageclass 4150

I have this model printer with a paper feed problem. Just wondering if anyone has seen it before and has a fix.
Just trying in copy mode (to try to identify the source of the problem) pressing the start button results in three attempts to pick up the paper in the cassette and try to feed it. After three attempts (three audible clicks that sound like a mechanical device trying to pick up the paper) the system errors out. There is no visual evidence of anything happening at the back of the cassette.
If I then open the printer and lift the internal tray as if to replace the toner cartridge and then close the machine up, the sheet of paper is picked up and feeds all the way through the machine with no hesitation (although no copy takes place).
I have received a couple of error 000 and error 001's during my repeated efforts to detect any visual evidence of the source of the problem, but they are not consistently repeatable.
I looked on the internet and there are references to firmware updates associated with an error 225. I was unaware that internal printer firmware could be updated. Could this, perhaps, fix this printer?
