Can't access 16bit program after sp2...

Father's computer took a hard hijack and spy/malware infection. After following your posted procedure (thanks guys it's saved my bacon a couple of times), we updated his XP Pro to sp2.

Everything seemed to work fine. No popups, no about:blank or other hijack, much faster. Except for one old program, which, unfortunately he must use. The program is a KeySoft product called Optimizer Plus (basically a PIM).

The message we get is:

c:\windows\system32\autoexec.NT. the system is not suitable for running msdos and mswindows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate application.

Everything else seems to work fine. What did I do wrong, or missed and how to we get around this problem?

One extra step. There is either spyware or viruses modifying these files, even after replacing them.

So before rebooting on the replacement step, set all files to read only.

 

Forgot to get back to you with an update ...

Thankyou folks, the information you pointed me to at M$ did the trick (both the config.nt and the autoexec.nt had been altered). All repaired and nicely locked down.

The desired program functions again.

Now if you could just help me with the software that sits in front of the machine...

 

I have another question about this- I went to http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324767 When it says to insert the disk, does it mean the xp disk or the game I'm trying to install? This sounds like a stupid thing but I have absolutely NO clue what I am doing!! My son got a Gamer Pack for Christmas (says MSDos and Windows 3.1 on the box) I have XP but can't get any of the games to work!!! I would appreciate any help you can give me on this!
