I'm running windows xp sp2 on my laptop and suddenly I'm unable to access any websites. I can ping the ip and also enter the ip in the address bar but not the url. I've tried both wired and wireless with the same results. Also, I've tried different locations with different routers. Same thing. I've run Adaware, Spybot, Malwarebytes, winsockxpfix. They didn't find anything. This happens with IE, Netscape and Mozilla. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

    Welcome to MGs outsideg.

Try this from the command prompt - ipconfig /flushdns

    Hello Outsideg.

Go to start, run and type in "cmd" minus the " 's and then type in "ipconfig /flushdns" then "ipconfig /registerdns". And let me know if that works. Also, did you try resetting your router/modem, and disabling/enabling your device?

    Thanks,
    Josh

Yes, I flushed the dns cache. I also tried stopping and restarting the dns service. I disabled/reenabled both my wireless and wired device. And reset the router. Also, another thing is I had Norton installed but uninstalled it and installed AVG instead. I looked at the hosts file but it looks ok.

Um. Check both your devices, and see if they have static DNS settings?.. Its possible that since they have Static DNS settings, it may be causing issues trying to reach the dns server.

Did you use the Norton Removal Tool?
May need to use this to clear any vestiges of Norton out. Try running twice with a reboot in between if you did not use it.

    Okay, just to recap.

    - Reinstalled Drivers?
    - Did ipconfig /release /renew.
    - Did Ipconfig /flushdns /registerdns.
    - Does not have Static DNS settings...
    - DNS Service Stopped, and restarted...
    - Do you have any Malware?
    - Host File is okay..
    - Could Norton had something to do with it? What about your current Win Firewall?

I've run malwarebytes a couple of times. I removed Norton with the Norton removal tool. And it doesn't look like there are any entries left of it in the registry. I don't have a firewall running currently. Just avg but since I can't get online it's not up-to-date.

I just tried doing everything again (all of the steps) and still nothing. I'm wondering if it's the network adapter? But probably not since it also happens through a wired connection.

One more thing....when I try to access a website it searches with search.live.com and then displays http:/// in the address bar. (Three slashes)

Both your Wireless and Wired connections are doing this. So I don't think its your adapter.. unless both are acting up. See if you can ping 127.0.0.0 (localhost). Its possible that it is, but still doesn't make sense that it isn't keeping the DNS information.

Weird question do you have any Proxies configured? "Tools" "Internet Options" and look in there... Possibly that was the issue all along.
