Can't access HDD

Toshiba Laptop died on me & I need the info from the HDD.
Bought 2 USB Portable Hard Disk Box'es (Little over zellous bidding on E-Bay)
Put HDD from laptop in box & plugged it into new laptop (Gateway, XP Home, SP2, 1.5GHz, 504 MB RAM, USB2)
I can find it in Device Manager under "Disk drives" but not in My Computer.

Tried plugging it into Desktop (E-Machine, XP Home, SP1, 2.17GHz, 448MB RAM, USB2)
Unit powers up & the computer goes into a rebooting loop.

Tried plugging it into wifes desktop ( XP Home, 1.8GHz, 640MB RAM, USB2)
Same results as laptop.

Final try... Genaric backup desktop (Win 98SE, 700MHz, 256 MB RAM USB1.1)

Here it shows up as a removable drive but Win 98 wants to format it because it can't read NTFS.

Any suggestions on how I can access this drive ????

 

Drive from dead laptop is already formatted. It has XP Home on it and is already in NTFS format.
When put in the USB drive case, I can't access it.
Problem with dead laptop is a bad motherboard, the drive is fine.

 

Yup... tried reinstalling drivers and it is enabled.
Under USB Device Properties/Volumes I clicked "Populate" and got:

Disk: Disk 1
Type: Basic
Status: Online
Part style: Master Boot Record (MBR)
Cap: 28616 MB
Unallocated Space: 0 MB
Reserved Space: 0 MB

Still doesn't show up in my computer or anyplace that I can access it.

 

??? If Windfows won't acknowlage that it is there, How can I share it with the computer it is on ?

 

Yup... rebooted many times
