Can't access Internet

Discussion in 'Hardware' started by reinstalledforeverlost, Sep 19, 2006.

  1. My friend has XP Pro. 3 weeks ago she has no internet. The connection Status says connected but she is unable to access the internet. I know this because i ran her LAN connection cable to my computer and it shows same, connected, however I cannot access internet with it either. My own Lan connection works perfectly. We each have a plug in the wall in a Dorm like setting for individual connection to a company called Surfnet. We live on the 4th floor, so i have no idea where the modem is for this building, probably main lobby somewhere. Anyways..Now...The technician has come from Surfnet and informed her that: Her computer is full of SPAM, and they have thus blocked her ports. Fair enough. She was told to completely clean her system, they highly recommended a clean install and reformat to get rid of all spam, viruses..etc..At which time this was completed they would reactivate her internet. With a strong warning, i might add, that if this happens again she will lose her internet for a month.

I don't really agree with any of that however, I swiped her harddrive, and did a clean reinstall of XP Pro. Still waiting for the Internet Provider to reactivate her Internet Connection or open her ports or whatever they are suppose to do..blah.

Now, in this downtiime, i figured i was update her computer with the newest updates from Microsoft, make sure all is functioning properly, download AVG, a firewall and somethings that she should have on her computer just to make sure this doesn't happen again. So i ran my cable from my internet connection to her computer to connect to the internet. NO CAN DO. It still won't connect to the internet. Again when I plug the cable into my computer, same OS, it works perfectly.

Can someone tell me, can an Internet Provider, block a "individual computer - say by IP Address or something". Understandably they can shut off the ports to the connection or say a specific "room" but is it possible they have blocked this computer specifically?

There is nothing wrong with my connection so im at a loss to why her "computer" cannot connect using my cable.

I have pinged all the ports that show on her computer, and i do get an error on one "Unable to contract your DHCP server: timed out". The IP and subnets and rest all come back as 0 lost.

Thank you for time. Sorry its such a long explanation.
any assistance or suggestions are appreciated and welcome..

  2. i might add some things to help you find a reason. Internet connection status reports the packets being very odd. Recieved is 1,900,000 to only 24,000 sent. The little icons that show the 2 computers, only the first one sometimes flashes blue, never the foreground one. I have tryed to run repair option on connection and recieve the error, Repair Failed, cannot renew IP Address, please contact your ISP or Administrator. All of this was done with the active internet connection of mine. (heres is definetly still disconnected from ISP)

The ISP could be blocking the comp by way of the MAC # on the network adapter. This is specific to each network adapter.

  4. oh thank you for answering..so very much.

okay then, do you have any idea where i might locate that address. I have downloaded with a usb stick Everest Home Edition. If she has a Mac Address it should be reported there under something..not sure which?

What is your opinion on that whole thing. Do you think that a Internet Provider can block a specific computer? Its not their property..Im not sure if im right in my thinking but i think that is BS.

It is hard to give you an answer since the service is not a common Internet service and without knowing specifically how the log on and the authentication I are done, there is no way to give you a valid answer.

These pages describe the common Cable and DSL used by the regulate ISPs like RR, and Verizon.

  6. no i suppose its not. Im in Amsterdam. Hmm trying to think of some way to explain the connection. There are 14 rooms on one floor, we have a simple plug in the wall to connect a cable from that to a computer in each room. We all pay individually for our rooms service. No routers in our rooms..just a plug that would be similiar to a light switch, only with a plug for a computer connection cable. If one person doesn't have the internet..then none of us do. Unless in this case this one person has been completely cut off. We all understand the ISP reason for her disconnect sorta, but we can't understand why, her computer has been excluded. It just doesn't make sense. Or does it to anyone?

There are 8 floors in this building all with the same internet. Its not very stable either. We all had a DSL before with no problems. Wish we still had it.

If you could picture a dorm, 8 stories high, and each individual room in the dorm can have internet or not.. its their choice, and are billed accordingly.

Sorry about the complaining here, and thanks again for your responses. It just doesn't seem right somewhere. We dutch, don't like this whole issue. Pot is okay no problem,, but SPAM..OH NOOO THE HORROR.

Thanks again for any assistance. I really appreciate your answers and responses.

  7. the dutch will revolt

My friend now has the internet..so they obviously blocked her internet from her connection and her computer..attaching email: thank you all for your assistance..but we will not stand for this. This could have happened to anyone here....hope it helps someone. tomorrow we protest in the streets. Even though problem is resolved..it can happen tomorrow to someone else.. they must fix this.

    Below is BULLSHIT..

And again i will explain to you how this works:
U have a virus of somekind on your computer; Surfnet reports this and tells
    us to take action.
If we dont do this Surfnet will get annoyed with us becouse it is their
    network that is at risk.
Therefore we are obligated to close down those ports otherwise Surfnet
itself will pull the plug on all students here.
So we are forced to disconnect the few clients who are cousing some
protection issues to surfnet including yourself.
This is done by Casema. Basicly i send an email to one of my contact persons
(whos names and/or telephone numbers i cant give out to clients from
Uilenstede) and they block those ports. Then i have to wait untill one of
those clients come to me and report that their internet is not working. Then
i explain them the situation and they are forced to clean their computers
from any viruses on it. After that is done i get the ok from the client that
thei pc is virusfree again and i send another email to my contacperson to
release those IP's again and therefore unblocking that port. This i have
done every day (send an email to my contacts explaning them the situation
and asking them to unblock as soon as possible) and i have not recieved an
email back. Today i had one of the intermediates at the servicedesk in
conversation to others and again i told them to get a move on to unblock
them. Then they started to make some telephone calls but still after that i
didnt recieve the ok that the ports are unblocked.

Again i absolutely will give u either a call or an email to let u know that
your port is unblocked as soon as this comes to me. Therefore i hope that u
can stop sending me an email every day which forces me now to work from my
home at 19:00 hours on a private network to send these types of email to
people who i explained whats going on and promise them i will contact them
as soon as i hear something.

So i do hope u take my word for it when i say what i said about 4 times now:
i will contact u as soon as i hear from Casema when the port is unblocked.
When...? i dont know and i have no extra force i can put on this situation
to fasten this process. This is out of my hands and i do hope u will leave
me with the small time i have left in the evening to relax a bit instead of
typing out emails to clients :)

I will be in touch asap about this situation.

    Greetings,

    Casema Servicedesk employee.

I actually feel sorry for this guy..who obviously cares about what he is accomplishing, with his employer a total tosser. If anyone cares i can post a response to this..after some sorta resolution.

There is probably a fast Internet service coming to the building into a Cable/DSL Router. This Router is connected to few switches that are connected via cable to each room.

I.e. the whole building is a private Network controlled by the entry Router.

It takes few seconds to block the connection to the room, or just using the crude method of unplugging the room from its switch connection.

That is why they are so careful about infected computer; coz on such arrangement one computer can infect the whole building.
