Can't access many files on my own dam computer

I just recently switched to W7 after many years of XP, so I'm probably suffering from "newbyitis" but it seems to me to be the height of PC arrogance for it not to let me browse any dam folder on my own computer I want. The problem is just in the C: drive in folders like 'Documentws and Settings'. Can someone help me to take control of this beast?

Also, when I click on a smiley it doesn't appear on this message area - whats up? (this is my first post) :cry:cry Oooops - just seen it on the preview - OK :)

    Thanks, Grayart

gimme some more detail: what is it doing when you click on the drive in explorer? are you logged in as an admin? have you gone into folder options and told it not to hide files?

since windows 7 and vista dont use the documents and settings folders anymore, there is a sort of shortcut now for compatibility purposes (when installing old software)

same goes for a few more folders. documents and settings is now the users folder.

same goes for the application data, cookies, local settings folders in the users folders. they are only there for redirect purposes.

I'll jump on that bandwagon.. it seems the newer OSes hide everything. Like here is your desktop - thats all you need. When they make these differnet flavors they need to ease up on the controls. As in 'home' or 'basic' you get a desktop, next level you get a run command on the start menu.. and so on.
I want to control my OS not the other way around.

Just clicking on a Drive in Explorer is not a problem - it's opening folders:
The only folders it will not let me open are:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Default User
    C:\Users\Default User
C:\Users\User Cookies, Local Settings, Nethood, Printhood, SendTo,
    StartMenu *
    C:\System Volume Information

    * The organisation of C:\Documents and Settings\User is identical to that in C:\Users\User

As far as I know, I am logged in as 'User' (I have a password which I set when I initialised Win 7 and have to use it everytime I start the computer), with the same access as Administrators. When I right click on the "forbidden" folders and open the 'Security tab, User has the same access rights as Administrators, and System.
I have gone into folder options - and set to show all files?

    Thanks

Have you tried right clicking on the folder and hitting the "take ownership" option. I THINK?? Windows 7 offers that as default. I know I have it. Its been so long I may of had to apply a registry tweak to get that option.

I am in the same boat. Still learning the ins and outs after many years of Xp. You may also have to go into the folder options in the control panel and use the view tab and select show hidden files and folders.
