Can't access network after virus removal

I have a HP workstation running on XP Pro SP3.
After successfully (it seemed) removing the fake antivirus "AntivirSolutionsPro" I was unable to access the internet with Internet Explorer. However Firefox seemed to work.

After reinstalling Internet Explorer 8 and rebooting, I was unable to access the network altogether. Network diagnostics for Windows XP reports "Windows could not detect any wired or wireless network cards".

However I do have a wired network card directly on the motherboard. I immediately installed a separate PCI card, which is recognized but again not working. Uninstalling and reinstsalling in the Device manager does not help. Also it is not possible to update the drivers.

The device manager shows yellow !-signs for all plug-and-play network adapters. The device manager reports: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

Showing the hidden devices, there are yellow signs on a number of devices, among them AFD, Cdaudio, Intel PentiumIII Processor Driver (!), IP Network Translator, NetBios over Tcpip, TCP/IP protocol Driver and a few more. For all of them the report says: "This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)"

I have started the computer using Knoppix, but it does not seem to be able to use the network, but then I may not handle knoppix well enough.

    Does anyone have an idea?

Check IE to see if it is looking for a proxy.

Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings

Make sure no boxes are checked.

You will probably need to get on the HP website and look for downloads for your system to install the missing device drivers.

    Thank you for answers.

The HP website has a number of options that I will try. I cannot find specific drivers for the non plug-and-play components that seem to be failing, but I will try a few options and return to this thread with a report.

I tried reinstalling the drivers that seemed relevant with no effect, and I also ran a system diagnose program, that did not identify any errors (I guess it was some kind ofr hardware test).

The system works normally except no network adapters are recognized by any application. Even after booting from a Linux CD (Knoppix), I was unable to use the network. Does that indicate a hardware error, or does Knoppix somehow depend on drivers installed for Windows?

    Any other ideas?

    1. First set back to the default settings of your Network Adapter using the Microsoft software:

    http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9664547

    2. Check there is not a Yellow Advice (!) near to the Network Device in the Device Manager.

    And tell us what happened.

Today I am back after a holiday.
I ran the Microsoft software and did not notice any difference. The Device manager still shows yellow alerts on all network drivers and a number of hidden devices.

I should add that I am now able to use the network adapter with Knoppix. I am not sure why this did not work in the first place.

    Hi

What is the model HP you have?

Likely with Plug n Play you need to install the Chipset driver first and reboot, then install the LAN driver.

If you have th eXP Cd then I would also once done the above, run from a command prompt, sfc /scannow to check for corrupted system files.

Is your internet still working in Firefox? My comp just wigged out (win patrol blocked something), and I couldn't get any internet in IE, however I had a download going, and it completed. Once I messed around with things (30-45 min later), I figured out that firefox was working, and I ran across this thread.

I'm not addressing the device manger part of this thread, as others are working with you.

If firefox is still working, check your settings in IE (mine had changed to "proxy server"). tools, internet options, connections, lan settings, automatically detect lan settings.

As long as I use Windows, no network applications work, Firefox, IE, mail apps etc. thus I cannot use the internet at all.

Furthermore, I cannot change a private folder into a shared one. The system replies:
"An error occured while trying to share (folder name). The Server service was not started. The shared resource was not created at this time"

However, if I boot the PC from a Knoppix CD instead of Windows XP, the network functions normally, as far as I can see.

If it works in Linux then obviously isn't a hardware problem, is Windows.

That symptons when you can't "adjust personal config (and like sahre a folder)" i guess are: virus, permissions (administrator account), windows malfunction.

I suggest you to try the procedures in:

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=35

And try some tools from there to check if isn't any virus.

About the (!) yellow advice in the Device Manager are obviously the Drivers, did you installed them correctly?

    To be sure, download this:

    http://www.lavalys.com/products/everest-pc-diagnostics

Check the model of your Network Adapter and try to download a new drivers.

I will wait for your response.

Check the proxy server settings in IE. Some viruses change that setting to localhost.

I ran Everest diagnostics, it produced a report that I cannot interpret. It lists the network adapter drivers and the non plug-and-play drivers but nothing to indicate whether they are in order.

Regarding drivers, see my first post. This was one of the first things I tried, but the system does not allow me to update the drivers. Since all the network adapters and a number of the hidden devices show yellow alerts, I dont't think the problem is any individual driver. But I may be wrong...

Regarding viruses, the problems started with virus, which I removed using Malwarebytes. There may of course be remaining virus problems that the tool could not repair, so I try a few more tools. One problem is the antivirus tool cannot update the database, since the network does not work...

Well you have to be sure about drivers, windows always go to install them automatically by default, and sometimes with specific devices that drivers aren't usefull and you will have to change them manually.

system does not allow me to update the driver

What you mean with that, there's an error updating? did you tried to force manually your own drivers?

Btw, did you updated recently some Service Pack?

I finally decided to give in and reinstall the system. Since I was able to backup data, it was no big problem, but i hate to be unable to solve the problem.

Thank you all for your efforts to help!
