Can't access NTFS permissions

I have WinXP Pro (the only OS on my comp) installed on a drive which used to be FAT32 (I had Win98SE before XP). I basically installed XP from Win98, but I did NOT upgrade Win98, I told the install to just delete everything and convert the partition to NTFS. Since I didn't FORMAT but rather just CONVERT the existing partition to NTFS, I'm wondering if that is the reason why I can't view/change NTFS permissions? I understand you can do that from the "Properties" page of any folder, right? Well the option is just not there, and I couldn't find anything in the policy editors that came with the OS either.
This is the first time I'm using XP on my home computer (in other words, the first time I'm an administrator) so I'm not exactly an expert in these things. Sorry if the question sounds stupid :D

EDIT: Nevermind, I dug around the forums a bit and found out that I just had to disable simple file sharing, so everything's ok now :)

2nd edit: Haha, thanks alanc, I got it. These forums are great!
