Can't access the internet from my desk top

For some reason I cannot access the internet through my desk top short cut, the only way that I can access it is through my control panel . Why this worries me is that my programs cannot update automatically update. :confused

 

More information is needed before any meaningful reply can be given! What OS are you using and service pack level, and what type of internet connection are you using, DSL, cable, dial up, wireless, etc. Did the problems start suddenly or is this a new computer?

 

It might be as simple as deleting that shortcut and creating a new, if you haven't already tried that.
