    Hello

I'm having trouble with the computer I use at work (WinXP SP2, 2.4Ghz P4, 512RAM). Recently the DSL connection we use (Verizon) stopped working. I spent several hours on the phone with tech support to find out that there is an error with my "browser or TCP/IP connection" (their words) that caused my browser to not accept website names as valid addresses.

Example: my homepage is set to www.google.com and if I open my broswer (Internet Explorer) I will get an error message saying the page cannot be displayed. However if i type in the IP Address (Im not sure what it was) Google would load as fast as it normally would, I could then use the google search button, but could not load any websites from links (Im assuming because they use the website name not the IP to find a site).

    Any Ideas?

    Thanks in advance,
    Bud

Ok first question is are you using a router, if so post the make and model. Second, on your computer goto start run type "cmd" hit ok. Then type ipconifg /all and paste the resulting info into a message here. Do those and i will post the rest of the process after I have that email.

Thanks for the reply. I'm currently at home so I cannot run the ipconfig command, but I can say that the modem I use is a dsl modem/wireless router in one. I, however, directly connect the computer in question to the modem with an ethernet cable.

I will post the ipconfig information as soon as I can get to a computer with an internet connection tomorrow.

    Thanks again,
    Bud

Ok also want you to try these general steps as well.
start run type "cmd" then hit ok
then into the command prompt type the following items
    netsh winsock reset
    reboot pc
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew
then try it again, if it doesn't work post back with the ipconfig /all info

    Hey,

I just tried all the steps you suggested, still the same problem occured. Here's the output from the ipconfig /all command I ran:

    Windows IP Configuration

    HOst Name: LANDMARKPC
    Primary Dns Suffix: (blank)
    Node Type: Broadcast
    IP Routing Enabled: No
    WINS Proxy Enabled: No
    DNS Suffix Search List: domain_not_set.invalid

Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection 2:

    Connection-specific DNS Sufix: domain_not_Set.invalid
Description: Intel<R> PRO/100 VE Network Connection
    Physical Address: 00-07-E9-90-6B-21
    Dchp Enabled: Yes
    Autoconfiguration Enabled: Yes
    IP Address: 192.168.1.64
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
    DHCP Server: 192.168.1.1
    DNS Servers: 151.204.0.84

I should probably note that I can connect to the wireless network with a separate computer.

    Thanks,
    Bud

Do you have a software firewall installed on your computer? If so, disable it, and try to browse the interweb.

Also, you may want to reprogram your router, by resetting it.

On a side note, can you PING your dns server?

Pardon my $.02, but if I opened my NIC TCP/IP properties and saw what yours says, the first thing I would do before anything else would be change the DNS Servers to 192.168.1.1 primary and no alternate, and check that my router was set to obtain DNS automatically from my ISP.
