What is likely to be wrong when it is impossible to remove programs from 'Add or Remove Programs' in the control panel? There isn't a button to do this, as there has always been when I use the tool.

I'm currently running through the malware removal steps, and cant get over this hurdle.

Want to remove Super Anti-Spyware in particular, went to C/Program files, and cant fully delete the program.

From previous posts on this issue I gathered I should Run REGEDIT, and so I changed a view programs back, but the full list of programs did not exist for me to complete the process.

Should I use system restore? Or is it even advisable to use it?

    thanks

There is the below which may help. However if you are in the middle of working thru malware removal, we generally advise you to be careful what you install until the fix is over. (Edit--I see you were referred to software anyway)

Add/Remove program Cleaner is a free and useful program that allows you to clean up the Add/Remove programs list in the control panel. It should only be used to remove entries that are broken and cannot be removed by running the uninstall program.

Can use system restore if you know all your points are clean. Be cautious otherwise. Would be tempted to get to the root of the problem myself... Now just to clarify-- when you go into control panel, do you see an applet for "add or remove progs"? or is it the programs themselves once the list has populated that you cannot uninstall?

    Thanks,
I can see the applet but when I go into 'Add/Remove Programs' , I can only remove those programs I fixed when I ran 'regedit' .

Also, there is a contradiction between what programs I find listed when I look under C;/Progam files, and what I find in the 'A/R Programs' . Is this common or a peculiarity?

I ran the program suggested but it only listed the programs I can already remove.

I did try to use system restore, but when I tried it failed. Thankfully' cos I do indeed want to get to the bottom of this!!

    This is a Tuffie (tough)

    Using Windows XP

I want to have the option to remove any programs, if you get my meaning.
In particular want to update java, and delete windows defender.

Tried to run 'Malwarebytes' previously today, got this message

    'Run time error
    Out of Memory'

What 'memory' are they allerting me to, and how can I fix it? Is it Virtual Memory ?

    Cheers Doc

Hey guys, anyone have any ideas how to get to the root of this.

Your advice is appreciated, however all you are suggesting is papering over the cracks.

    Any real solutions out there?

Maybe you need to be a little more specific.

Any error messages and so on.

    Hi,

    Apart from not being able to remove programs from the control panel, I usually get this error, after a program launch failure or when I try to install/update a security program;

'Run time error 'series of numbers 0000....etc'
    Out of Memory'

What 'memory' are they allerting me to, and how can I fix it? Is it Virtual Memory ?

However I notice my screen tends to pause momentarily, for example, if I open a file (on WinXP)....the icons on my desktop dissappear, then appear again, (like a flicker, if you can imagine)

    These are the main problems!

Check to see that the below file exists:

    c:\windows\system32\appwiz.cpl

This is the Control Panel file that causes Add/Remove Programs to run. If this file is missing, you need to put a copy back into that folder. You should be able to find a backup copy on your PC. Possibly in the C:\i386 folder or in another folder. Or you will be able to copy one from your Windows CD. Other people here in the Software Forum can help you further with this if you need help restoring this file.
