    Hello everyone,

I've got a HP ENVY 23 and I'm having issues trying to resolve this matter to no avail. I have no sliding lever for brightness level anywhere even in the action center. I've tried updating the Intel (R) HD graphics 4400 driver which didn't work and then I tried using the Microsoft basic display adapter which didn't work.

Finally I went to see if the Generic PnP monitor was enabled, it was I clicked on update but still no brightness scale. Nothing I tried works just seeing if anybody had ideas or solutions....Thanks

    Peace

Adjust the brightness, etc. on the monitor - not in Windows.

Eldon, the monitor itself doesn't have anything on it to adjust, It's an all-in-one with wireless keyboard, I even checked everything on the keyboard and found no adjustments to be made..thanks

    Peace

Are you new to laptops? If so, maybe you're looking in the wrong place.

Is there a key anywhere on the keyboard (probably somewhere near the Alt and Ctrl keys) marked 'Fn'? If so, note what colour the letters are and search for symbols in a corresponding colour, that might represent the sun. You're looking for circles with spikes around outside edges of the circles or something similar. (NOTE: NOT anything that looks like the moon - that will put your computer to sleep. :D )

They're usually along the top row on HP, I think, maybe around the F7 key, but on my Dell, it's on the arrow keys at the bottom right, so check all around. On my Dell, the two keys marked with a sun each have an arrow head, one pointing up and one pointing down.

Holding down the Fn (function) key and tapping one of the sun keys brightens or dims the monitor. As far as I recall, on all laptops, you need to tap repeatedly to get the adjustment you want; holding down the sun key doesn't keep it changing, like holding down the sound button on a TV remote would.

EDIT (again... first time was because I forgot to warn you about the moon symbol. Oops!)

My Dell does have a way of adjusting it in the Monitor properties but it took me months to discover that because it's very well hidden. That could be your problem or it could be that the option isn't available because you don't have all the chipset drivers or HP special handling drivers or something like that. Off the top of my head, I can't remember what type of drivers activates that feature for Dell laptops. I think it's Dell Quickset drivers and there may be something similar for HP laptops.

chookers this is a Desktop I'm on but I'm not new to those or laptops but I'm far far from an expert! :) I've checked all over the keyboard with no luck. When I upgraded to Windows 10 from 8.1 that's probably when it went away ie: the brightness key as I do remember when I got the computer several years ago when I first got it I was playing with the brightness in the control panel. The screen isn't super bright but it would be good to tweak it a little....Thanks for your input

    Peace

It's still there in Windows 10. They just moved it.

Right click an open area of the Desktop and select Display Settings. Here's what you'll get:

    @Eldon,

The OP's computer is an all-in-one. He's tried the things listed in your link and they haven't worked.

The screenshot I posted came from the Windows 10 Display Settings for my Dell Inspiron laptop.

He tried my suggestion and as you can see from his screenshot, the Adjust Brightness slider isn't present.

He upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1. and I'm wondering if the upgrade is the issue. Many of us here at the Forums had issues with going the upgrade route to Windows 10 and wound up doing clean installs of Windows 10. I've got clean installs on both of my computers.

My apologies for my unhelpful info, earlier. I hadn't twigged to it being an all-in-one, after looking it up online before my first reply. I knew there were Apple computers like that but I had no idea they were being done for Windows - haven't been much in the computer game for some time. Funnily enough, I saw one this morning in a 'don't tip it, recycle it' shop. It was only after coming back to check on this thread and reading what else was said that I put the pieces together - it could have been an Envy I saw; it was definitely an HP.

I don't remember seeing any adjustment buttons on it but I wasn't looking, not having made the connection... :D

Restore your system to the latest backup point when you can access the options to change screen brightness.
This should be the fastest way to get around such issue, I think.

Eldon, all the above didn't work including updating the graphic driver, I'm on a desktop and nothing on my keyboard has those function keys and nothing in the action center either.

mdonah, I believe I upgraded to Windows 10 through a link that Microsoft sent out at that particular time, where would I go in the system to uninstall and reinstall Windows 10?

Not to worry chookers I appreciate your help.

Paul23 my restore points only go back to mid January I went from Windows 8.1 to 10 several years ago, the bad thing is I only adjusted the brightness level when I had 8.1 and never attempted to access the brightness level until yesterday several years later.

Eldon, I went and checked under each icon and didn't see a thing.. Screenshot (11).png

Your screenshots were exactly what I was going to suggest. :D
    BTW... I don't use Windows 10.

Oh no on the contrary... you're good! :D....ok what version of Windows do you use if any?

That's what I have, it's a shame they don't offer any drivers for Windows 10. Ok I have to ask you also: what version of Windows do you use if any?
BTW: Thanks to all that replied to my thread and helped out I really appreciate it! and special thanks to Eldon who hit the nail on the head as I never would of thought of looking there.

    Peace

Eldon runs XP and 7 (signature) and plodr said she'd not go beyond 7.

When I changed Control Panel to Category view (large icons) under Power options the slider shows.

    Cat view.jpg
I run Win 7, 8.1 AND 10 on two laptops.

What I don't understand is why the OS (Win 10) is NOT consistent across machines. It SHOULD be.

What I run is posted as my signature in every post I make.
    7" ASUS eeepc LXLE Desktop
    Aspire V5 7 HomePremium
    eMachine 7 HomePremium (32 bit)

Those are my 3 main computers. I also have 2 Android tablets and 4 other computers in the house for my husband and me.

Yeah you would think it would be constant, maybe it's just mine....hopefully not!

Ok now mdonah mentioned Saturday that Eldon has the OS he runs in his signature line but I don't see it, now you're telling me it's in yours also but I don't see it (something maybe up on my end? )...hmmm I hope not. I kinda liked Windows 8/8.1 I never had any problems off of the top of my head.

    Peace
