Can't "Auto-Update"

I am SO over this problem.
I CAN access the internet, no problem
I CAN get and send email

But for months I have not been allowed to:

Auto update Windows updates, Norton updates, and now (just installed) AVG updates. It says I have to do so manually, it can't find internet connection.

Well this is unacceptable. I was just informed that I had passed on a virus and then noticed that my Norton Auto Protect says OFF and Email Scanning says ERROR. I attempted to change those to "enable" but it wont let me. It said to click OPTIONS and SYSTEM and click ENABLE, but there is no SYSTEM in my options menu.

I'm very much frustrated here. I dealt with having to d/l my windows updates from the Microsoft Website for months, but now my anti-virus program is not auto-updating either. I attempted to install www.grisoft.com AVG anti-virus because I thought something was just wrong with Norton, but AVG wont let me update either.

Now I'm thinking this may have something to do with the fact that my auto-backup software (off site) doesnt work either.

What in the world gives here

    This is my desktop pc
    XP Home
    512 mb ram
    80 gb hd
    Linksys 2.4 GHz 801.11b router
disabled ZoneAlarm as soon as I got my router several months back.

    Anybody?

Over 30 people have looked at this...she's *bumped* it once and I'm *bumping* it back to page 1 for the "evening crowd". We can't let "RightGirl" down. She's too new here.

    Thank you Pegg
I'm thinking it HAS to be a router issue
perhaps it's configured in such a way that it makes my different "updatable" software think I dont have internet access, when I do.

Sure hope someone knows what I need to do to correct this problem

I'm about to start drinking the koolaid

    RightGirl,

I know you said you disabled ZoneAlarm, did you disable or uninstall?
The reason I am asking is your update problems and getting rid of ZA have been a couple of months.

I am looking for a post here that deals with the winsock fix, I think Kodo put it up. May not work but I will keep looking and see if it sounds like your problem, one way or another.

    Steve,

I had just disabled, but I just took your advice and uninstalled.
I'll let you know how it worked as soon as I reboot.

    hoping hoping :D
