When I try to do a full backup from C: to D: so I can install XP, Drive Image 2002 bombs out about 3/4 of the way through with an error message, and no way of continuing.

"Bad block encountered on read. Data1cab"

When I search for data1.cab I get over 20 instances, in various programs.

Is there any way to pin down which data1.cab is bad?

Otherwise I will cut and paste all data1.cabs from C; to elsewhere before I start the backup.

Any better, brighter ideas will be appreciated. Bazza

Have you already tried running a scandisk/chkdsk?

Yep, should have mentioned this. Normal scandisk and chkdisk do not pick up anything. Will do a thorough check although it will take ages. Bazza

Did a thorough check. No problems encountered by scandisk. Thought I'd be smart and cut and paste all data1.cabs to another drive and then run my backup program. I usually copy and paste but this time I cut and paste.

I did a search for all data1.cabs. Found 24, or so, highlighted them all and tried to CUT and paste, not COPY and paste, to another hard drive. I carried out the CUT and paste to E: drive. On checking E: drive I find all 24 are COMBINED into one file. Don't know how this happened. I assume it might be because all the files had the same name (data1.cab).

Naturally all the original instances, from C: drive, are gone because I used CUT instead of copy.

Anyone know how I can reverse the situation and get my 24 cabs back again.

This backup and transfer procedure I was trying to carry out is turning into a nightmare.

Really need help on this. Sorry post is a bit long. Bazza

after a big mistake like that you could have hit CTRL + Z to UNDO the previous command.

But, right now you are to late...

    Or maybe not.......

    Freeware tool to undelete files....

    Another one....

    PC Inspector

The above are free. Neither of them have I tried. The one I know works on even corrupted MFTs and partitions is GetDataBack....Which isn't free....

Thanks, thefool. I havedownloaded all 3 to E: drive so as not to interfere with c: drive stuff. Will try them out. I don't remember ever using Crtl-Z in over 20 years of computing but won't forget it now. Thanks again. Bazza

Of my "over 20 years" I only recently (6 months) started using CTRL+Z to undo mistakes...

    Edit:

Is the E: drive a seperate hard drive? Or partition?

C: and E: are 15gig partitions on the main drive. D: is a removable 10gig harddrive on my laptop. Bazza
