i originally posted in malware removal - and was asked to post here.

I was following the malware removal protocal, used malwarebytes. 1 item was detected, removed and then i was prompted to reboot. Now I cannot boot my OS Windows XP in any mode. All system diagnostics check out fine. It was suggested i download some CDs but I don't know how to get them to boot without my os.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

using HP probook 6540b. I don't have the install discs.

Each of those downloads is an ISO file. An ISO file contains the files necessary to create a bootable CD. When burned to a blank CD as an Image file, the CD can then be used to run a live OS that runs from the CD rather than the HD.

    The process is fairly simple.
Download one of the ISO files from that list.
    Download and install imgburn.
Put a blank CD in your CDROM.
Run imgburn and select "Write Image File to Disc" option.
In the window that opens Browse to the ISO file you downloaded and select it.
Click the double icon at the bottom of the window to begin burning.
When burning is complete take the CD put it in your HP and boot from the CD. (You may have to change the boot order in HP setup or perhaps F12 will give you the choice to boot from CD).
It should load up to a menu of options depending on the ISO you chose.

I'm hoping that someone that keeps track of these type of things reads the thread and can give you some advice on how to use one of those CDs. It seems to me people having problems after malwarebytes is fairly common, but I haven't really paid attention to the solutions.

Just for clarity what exactly happens when you choose the various boot options, safe mode--last known good etc. Does it hang or does it restart or blue screen?

Thanks you sach2. Another rookie question :-o - the files in those links are .exe, Can you give me those steps to get iso?

Also, to your third point, when i try to boot in any mode it tries to launch and then just loops back to the screen with all the start up options.

I am also hoping someone else responds to how to use the CDs...

    Thanks again

Hi, actually most of those links are to ISO files.

I think the first Avira link is not exactly precise. The proper link would be to this ISO file which could be written to CD and booted from.

I don't know how much good an antivirus CD is going to be since something in your startup files has been changed. I'm hoping someone has a plan for using one of those CDs.

This is an old thread about a boot problem after running malwarebytes. I can't vouch for anything in it. I just want to give you something to think about should you find similar solutions while searching for an answer. If you wanted to try that after more reading or getting more advice. Recovery Console can be downloaded here if you don't have a Windows installation CD.

Thanks sach2 and plodr. I tried the recovery console - I can boot from the disc, i get windows set up loading files, then as soon as it starts windows i get the blue screen "a problem has been detected..." I assume this is the blue screen of death, rather than the black acreen of death I had beforE, but unlike my black screen, this one also says technical information:

    ***STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF78DA63C, 0XC0000034, 0X00000000, OXOOOOOOOO)

    Does that help?

I will try plodr's suggestion of trinity.

I was able to use the ubuntu os and backup any necessary files, so if need be i can recover xp without worrying about losing files. Unfortunatley i can't seem to find the malwarebytes log file that recorded what was deleted in the first place. I think thhose logs are stored in the program, which I cannot launch in ubuntu.

As a side note - the laptop is a lender from my former employer. I wanted to return it in the shape I borrowed it, but they do have all the discs to reload other software. If there is a suggestion that easily wipes the whole thing clean let me know.
