My father has been using a very old computer (we're talkin 16 megs of ram) for all his important work stuff. It runs Windows 2000, and usually when he boots up, when the login name and password box comes up he presses "cancel" and then it loads Windows. All of the sudden, when that box comes up now, we cannot select the cancel button, and it is requiring us to enter a name and pass - even though one does not exist (or at least we don't know what it is). I tried booting up in safe mode, but the same problem arose. If anyone knows an easy solution, I'd be very grateful!

    Thanks,
    Josh

Actually, that would not be 2000. You cannot click cancel to a 2000 log in and still get to the desktop.

Can you please reverify the OS?

Thanks for the reply... my apologies, it is Windows 2000 Professional, but I received clarification on the error. My father would not press cancel, he would press OK (or enter) with no password entered, which would bring him into Windows. Of course now, it says that the empty password is not valid.

You can use this to reset the password to whatever you want:

There are other software packages such as UBCD (Ultimate Boot CD) which contain utilities to do this as well.

Thank you so much, Wave, I'll try it tonight!

Looks like most of the solutions involve changing the registry, something I'm not too comfortable doing. Looks like I might have to pay up for Geek Squad.. :(

If the USER name IS NOT administrator......try changing the username to: administrator
    then pressing enter.
