Can't boot up laptop

I was using my laptop, HP Compaq centrino, the other night (plugged into the wall) when a screen came up indicating multiple trojans and tried to get me to access a cleaning site. I minimized all that and tried to download NOD from eset (have it on my home computer) onto the laptop. It froze up. I really didn't want to button it off, but it would not respond to anything. I turned it off and tried to restart it. It will load up to my start page with wallpaper, but not one of the buttons, icons, etc works to access the laptop. I cannot even see how to get into "safe mode". Has anyone seen this before??? Can anyone help me fix it???

 

Did you not have any AV installed previous to downloading eset nod32?

Have tried the on/off several times. No luck. Just last night I finally got the system to run in safe mode. ran nod, deleted 5 known corruptions, emptied quarrantine to recycle, then emptied recycle. am working my way through the stickies under malware, but even after rebooting, I still cannot do anything. the system comes up very slowly, then does not allow me to use any keys (ie start, my computer, etc) In fact, when I right clicked my computer the icon disappeared and everything locked up again. As for AV, the Norton that came with the laptop apparently ran out, but I had malaware? on it, though not technically an AV. Going to try more of the stickies list in safe mode today and see how far I get. Any other suggestions?
