Can't boot up

My son's Acer Aspire 5000 laptop won't boot up. No matter which safe mode option I select (SM w/ networking, debugging, etc..) I end up w/ error messages. The most recent and most frequent message is this:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
A driver corrupted pool memory used for holding pages destined for disk.
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.
If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup options, and then select Safe Mode.

First, I should mention that he hasn't added any hardware recently. This all happened when he fell asleep watching a movie one night. He woke up in the morning and this message was there, and he hasn't been able to boot up since.

I downloaded a memtest and ran it from a boot. I'm not too familiar w/ the test, but stopped it after it had run for 7.5 hours??? I tried swapping the RAM but lost my screen when I tried to reboot. I tried running the recovery discs, but it didn't even seem to recognize that (and I did switch the optical drive to the 1st boot drive in the bios)

I'm at a loss as to what to try next and would appreciate any suggestions.

I checked Microsoft's knowledge base for the error code 0x000000DE and they have nothing listed, but lots of stuff listed for 0x000000ED; maybe you switched the D & the E? Anyway, the ..ED error relates to the symptoms you're describing, so check this link; hopefully it helps.
