I bought a used HP Compaq nc6220. I upgraded the CD-RW to a uj832 DVD-RW burner; couldn't get it to work. I used Nero, DVD decrypter, DVD shrink 32, InterVideo, Burn 4 free, Win DVD Creator 2. I wasn't even trying to copy protected DVD's! All of these programs stop after encountering various read errors. I have tried 3 different drives thinking maybe it was the drive itself. Updated the firmware for the drive; didn't work. uninstalled the firmware driver and upgraded the BIOS and reinstalled the firmware for the DVD rom; didn't work. I am at my wits end with this . Hoping someone has a solution.

    Greetings, marjemal.

What operating system and service pack # are you running? Did the original optical drive work correctly?

    Hi Caliban,
According to hp, that uj832 is the upgrade for the nc6220. So, around 4:30 this morning I tried another drive in it and decrypted and burned the little mermaid! (But, of course, it won't do it again.) Any way, I'm running XP SPIII with 1 gb of ram, and the original cd-rw did work. Now it's back to the same old read errors.
Who or what is Occam? :)

Read errors can be quite bothersome. One thing you might try is burning at the slowest speed possible. Another common cause of the errors is the media itself - you might try another brand, and make sure of the correct format (DVD + R, DVD - R, etc.).

Occam's Razor is often quoted as 'the simplest solution is usually the best'.

Personally, I like the following translation: 'Eliminate the impossible, and whatever is left, however improbable, must be the truth'. It certainly helps when working with computers. ;)

Just thought of something else: try this Microsoft fix - probably won't change things, but it's worth a shot.

Do try the MS fix as that solves some issues.

I'm reading this thread again and the problem seems to be the drive won't read the original DVD not in the actual burn process? You can't copy the DVD to your hard drive?

No, you're right. I don't get the files as far as the hard drive. It supposedly will burn plus or minus R. What is this elusive MS fix you speak of? Somewhere in the system files? I like your quotations and references. Wish I were more well versed.

    Hey Guys.
One drive seems to work. What are the chances that 4 out of 5 drives are bad?! It's probably the computer itself, right?

Have you swapped out the connector cable? (The one where the optical drives are hooked up to the motherboard). Those do go bad sometimes.

Hmmm. Hadn't thought of that. Ok, lets see if it lives! All right, here's the status. I swapped out the drive that seems to be working (after MS Fix); put in one of the other drives in and ran MS Fix again; it's now going through the tool kit in Nero. It actually wrote a simulated disk and passed the benchmark. Scanning the simulated disk now. Couple more tests and I'll try to burn for real. Gonna' check on that cable online. Getting really bored with the whole thing but I'm gonna' see it through! I thank you "Gentlemen Three" for all your help, cuz I was really getting frustrated!!! Maybe I should change my avatar now.

Actually marjemal, I'm a gal not a gentleman. ;) I know it's hard to tell from a username.

Oops, Sorry. I should know better than to make an assumption like that. I get that so much from my phone voice, and people don't expect me to know what I'm talking about when I give them any kind of suggestion about computers. Now that I think about it, my user name might be mistaken also. Oh well. Sorry and thanks again. Got another drive working. Just plugged in a third. Don't feel like going through the motions, but... I'm Still looking for that connector. Sounds like a piece I should have on standby.

    Well, I'm a gentleman...or, at least a guy. ;)

You might touch base with any co-workers/friends to see if they've installed a drive lately - most boxed drives come with a cable included, but many people don't replace them, or replace good cables.

OK. That's better. Wanted to let you know that I've gotten all the drives working. Alittle MS fix some Nero benchmarks, Windows diagnostics. firmware and Bios upgrades and then try to burn, over and over and over. Some of it had to do with the disks I was trying to read. Some were previously burned and just wouldn't give a good read on anything. Anyway, I'd like to thank you all, Lady and Gentlemen! Hope to have your help in the future. (Oh I'll be back!)
P.S. this one doesn't have a connector ribbon. It's soldered onto the mboard. Whew dodged that one. :D
