I can't close Enemy Territory Quake Wars and Qtracker server browser via Task Manager. In the case of Quake Wars the issue is well known in the game community. I thought it was a bug with the game itself but I just installed Qtracker and it won't unload from memory. The only way is to restart the PC but I don't want to restart the PC. I don't know why certain programs refuse to unload from memory as most of my programs thus far don't give me this problem. I have this problem with BitComet, Quake Wars, and Qtracker. I tried the taskkill command in command prompt it doesn't work it tells me the process is terminated but it is as it's still in Task Manager. I tried Process Explorer and can't kill it that way. I also tried killing it via Task Manager that too doesn't work. I don't have any malware problems that I know of I just did a whole suite of scans the other day and came up clean. ZoneAlarm is fully updated from what I can tell as is all other protective programs and Windows Firewall is permanently disabled did that when I first put this PC together. So I don't know. I have Windows Vista 32 bit pre SP1.

Had a similar problem with a different bit torrent program, it was a setting in the programs preferences. Real pain logging off, rebooting, to close a program

    Hi

Try Kill Process or if adventurous PSKill from the command line

Will likely need to right click Kill Process's shortcut and choose "run as administrator" for you to have full admin rights, also if using PSKill from commandline then open a CMD prompt the same in right click > run as admin.

Sadly some buggy software have services that have dependancies with other processes that hold on to the open process and not allow you to close them unless forced.

TaskProcess and PSKill don't work either. PSKill reports the process is terminated and it disappears from TaskProcess's list but is still in memory as far as Task Manager is concerned and the program remains locked shut forcing me to reboot in order to restart it.

Some programs have a binary presence. They are very difficult to 'kill' because the binary doesn't spawn subprocesses in the normal fashion. Instead they use an OS service program like RunDLL to be the parent of one half of the binary pair. When one of the binary programs is shut down, the other restarts it, remaining virtually unkillable. :)
