    hi,

just installed a fresh version of windows xp and currently can not connect to the internet.

it shows in device manager that i have several yellow question marks i.e.
    ? Ethernet controller,
    ? PCI Device,
    ? PCI simple communication controller,
    ? video controller (VGA compatible),

i am looking at this list and feeling that something is missing. I have tried to update the motherboard but it appears that the drivers are not longer available.
If someone could help i would be greatful.

    Thanks

You will need to go to the manufacturer's website, and put in the model of the computer, in order to download those drivers. Due to you installed XP, in what appears to be a non-OEM version, you have to do homework, to resolve those missing drivers.

If you wish, you can post, manufacturer of the machine in question, model number of said computer. The VGA & Ethernet controller info would be on the manufacturer website under the spec's for the machine.

He is right. Go to the computer manufacturer's website and type in the make and model of your computer. It should be on the side depending on what kind of computer you have. Get the drivers for your make and model and save them somewhere where you can easily have them backed up and ready if you need them again. It will save you hell. OR once you get your networking back, use windows automatic updates. It will download the right drivers for you and save you the searching. That really worked for me. So here's the breakdown: 1. Get your networking drivers from your manufacturer's website, install and reboot. Make sure it is exactly compatible with your computer and version of XP otherwise you could end up with constant BSODs. 2. Allow Windows Automatic updates search the internet for your drivers so that you can resolve these other issues with out of date drivers. Look through the updates so you can select the ones you want and then let Windows do the rest. Hope this helps out.

I found that if you are using a modem, dissconnect the modem for about 1 minute then when all the lights reset themselves it should read your modem. I have found this out myself and I dissconnected the Ethernet cable and installed the modem through the USB cable. Once it it reconizes the modem, you can switch back to the Ethernet cable and it will install your Ethernet modem connection and then your go to go.

This is not a modem issue surferman08, it is due most likely because they do not have the drivers for the hardware.
