Can't connect to eudora.com

After reinstalling Windows XP Pro SP2 on a new hd, tried to go to www.eudora.com (and just eudora.com) to dl the latest version, but neither IE 6, Firefox 1.5.0.6, nor Opera 9.01 will connect to the website. I can get to qualcomm.com, but anything with "eudora" in the url will not connect.

I tried a pc at my office today and it connected instantly.

I've tried specifying http://www.eudora.com as a trusted site in IE. At this point my firewall is Windows Firewall and I tried shutting that off. Still no connection.

I was able to dl the program from tucows.com, but would like to access the Eudora forums.

I also tried reconnecting my old hd by itself and still can't connect. New HD by itself doesn't connect. I've looked and changed just a few settings in the browsers, but nothing works.

My ISP is Adelphia, which was just taken over here by Time Warner. And I have no problem accessing any other website that I've tried.

Any ideas? Thanks for any help.

Reboot in Safe Mode w/Networking and try to establish a connection.

Make sure you aren't connecting through a proxy, and any extra hops between your internal network and the Internet aren't being filtered.

Open a command prompt and run an nslookup on the domain. Try to establish a connection with http://199.106.114.30/ and see if it works.

Check the HOSTS file and make sure it isn't listed.

    Thanks for the ideas.

I rebooted in safe mode, but still couldn't connect to eudora.com.

I have cable internet service, and connect directly to the internet. No proxy, no network locally. I couldn't find anything that would be filtering this site.

I ran the nslookup as suggested and got the same ip address, 199.106.114.30, but could not connect to it.

Looked at the HOSTS file. The only entry was "127.0.0.1 localhost".

I think I have found one of the great mysteries of the Universe. Now if I could just solve it, there would certainly be a book in there somewhere.

This may not be something that is on your end then. Can you post the output of 'tracert 199.106.114.30' please?

I would uninstall one of your browsers, then reinstall fresh. Try uninstalling firefox. I forget what firefox deletes when it uninstalls, so at the very least copy over your bookmarks.html file (from root\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\defaults\profile most likely) and then uninstall it. After reinstalling the program, reboot in safe mode with networking and attempt to establish a connection using the websites IP address.

Your problem sounds very strange, and I really doubt your IP address is being filtered server-side. There may be congestion/DNS issues though, so you may want to consider running PATHPING 199.106.114.30 and seeing what the results are.

I would also attempt to establish a connection through an anonymous proxy.

I was able to get to eudora.com via an anonymous proxy. Thanks for that idea. I haven't tried uninstalling any browsers yet.

    1. Backup your router's configuration file to your hard drive
    2. Reset the router
    3. Power down your computer
    4. Pull the plug on your router and let it sit for a minute
    5. Plug the router back in, then reboot the computer.

Once it reboots, go to a command prompt and run these commands in this order:

    ipconfig /flushdns
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew

Thanks again for the ideas. I realized I neglected to originally mention my router, which I have just so I can use a Vonage account.

Anyway, I didn't understand about backing up the router's config file and didn't quickly find anything on it, but I did reset the router as you said and followed all instructions. Still cannot connect to Eudora.com. Additionally, I totally removed the router from the system and still could not connect. (I did run the series of ipconfig commands you specified.)

Although I can work around not being able to access the website, I normally use Eudora in sponsored mode, so it has to connect to their servers to download the ads. But Eudora itself cannot connect, as I get a message every now and then that the program is reverting to free mode since it cannot connect to the server.

The strange thing is with my old XP install on a different hard drive (and it is only connected to my system when I need to access something on it), I cannot connect to eudora.com, but the Eudora program has no problem downloading the ads! Thanks for your help, but I wouldn't blame you for giving up on this one.

Backing up the router's configuration file basically means you are exporting the configuration settings of that router to a *.bin file. So let's say you backed up the router's config file then reset the router and it still didn't resolve your problem, you could then import that file from the GUI/command line interface of your router and restore all your old settings.

Your original tracert had your first hop (your router) timing out. Run more tracert's and make sure they are not timing out after you reset the router.

Anyway, it may be very difficult to narrow down your problem. Run a thorough virus scan on your computer first. Then start to selectively uninstall programs, and reboot in safe mode with networking to test connectivity. Do this for your browser and the eudora program at the very least.

Usually when I am sitting at someones computer I just use the GUI to go through their computer and begin diagnosing everything. Since we don't have that luxury, I want you to create a handy batch file that will give me a lot of information on what state your computer is in. Try to connect to eudora.com like you normally would first. Then copy and paste everything below into a text file:

    arp -a > %systemdrive%\EUDORA_OUTPUT.txt
    mem /debug >> %systemdrive%\EUDORA_OUTPUT.txt
    tasklist -v >> %systemdrive%\EUDORA_OUTPUT.txt
    netstat -b >> %systemdrive%\EUDORA_OUTPUT.txt
    cscript //H:CSCRIPT
    eventquery.vbs /fi "type eq error" >> %systemdrive%\EUDORA_OUTPUT.txt
    eventquery.vbs /fi "datetime eq 09/01/06,12:01:00am-09/09/06,1:00:00pm" /fi "type eq warning" >> %systemdrive%\EUDORA_OUTPUT.txt

Then save it as "whateverfilenameyouwant.BAT" (no quotes). Double click on it to execute it, then look for a file called EUDORA_OUTPUT in the root directory of the drive that you have the OS installed on. Paste the entire contents here, or just attach it.

When you try to connect to eudora, what is the exact error message that your browser gives you? Also, when did this problem first start? Try to remember what was changed/installed since then.

I hate to say this, but you may be looking at a clean reinstall. This might actually be faster than trying to dig through your entire system and pick apart what might be wrong.

I'm not sure what worked, but before starting on your latest suggestions, I tried connecting to eudora.com and it worked! Strange, because I had definitely restarted the system after the last round of instructions and it didn't work. Also, the Eudora program is also able to download their ads.

    Thank you for your help!
