Can't connect to internet but router is sending wireless signal

okay, I'm frustrated completely with either Windows Vista, Netgear, or Comcast, but most likely all three. My problem is I unhooked my computer via the ethernet cable thats was plugged directly into the router (Netgear WGR614 v8) that sent the signal to the other 3 comps. I installed and connected the router on a New Dell w/ Vista (I've only used XP on my other comps), 1gbRAM, 160gb HDD, Nvida networking controller & graphics. The was no problems internet worked fine for that computer that was hard wired into the router, but I saw there wasn't any wireless signal going out. Checked the other XP comps & sure enough wasn't. So uninstalled the router, cleaned the registry, unplugged the DSL modem & router (so can reset), waited 5 minutes, reinstalled. After all this, it is now saying that it can't connect with the Dell, but the wireless is perfect, since I'm on it now. I run the network diagnostics, it tells me to reinstall the router. I do, no fix. Run it again tells me to rebuild the adapter. I do, no fix. Run again, tells me reset IP address. I do, no fix. Finally tells me it my router or modem connection. So I get my tried & true Trendnet BVRp452 which sent a signal for Bellsouth for 2 years no problem. Of course tells me can't install cause its not able to get a internet signal, but its still sending wireless no problem. So I figure ok, screw that, put one the wireless adapter I have into. It install but then tells me the same problems: rebuild adapter, reset IP, rreset modem.

I finally had comcast come out & look at it and they are saying it has something to do with the comp not them (this was 5 days ago) & still can't get it right after tons of rebuild & resets & reinstalls. Called them again, they are saying that they can't even get a full signal from the modem so it is them, but if they come out again & its not they are charging me $60, so really want to get all troubleshooting done before they show.

Can someone please help me on this? I know its alot of words to work thru but hopefully its an easy fix and won't even need them to come out. Please reply to thread or send to my name at aol. Thanks for your time have a good one.

So your Netgear WGR614 v8 will not work with a wired connection? Is that your issue?

From one of the machines that has a problem do a START | RUN | CMD....OK. Then in the Command Window, type IPCONFIG /ALL.

    Post the resuls here.

Thats correct the comp isn't working on a wired in connection or even if I try and use a wireless adapter that my other comps use. I'm trying to figure out if its the comp or the router or the adapter.

I forgot to also say that I tried connecting the comp to the modem directly and gave me all the same type of answers. I'm doing as you asked now gonna take me a few cause in the middle of eating dinner, but will be like 5 mins. Thanks

Oh....one thing you should understand that the modems have a tendency to remember MAC addresses and will refuse to provide a connection if another MAC address tries to connect. So, if you disconnect a device from the modem, you must power off the modem and wait a little while BEFORE connecting another device. That is so the modem "forgets" the other MAC address. Unfortunately, you may have to do it a couple of times.

I've unplugged the modem from the wall at least a dozen times & waited 5 sometimes 10 minutes before pluging back in. Hang on getting the other info u asked for

OK......do you know how to change the TCP/IP properties on the network adapter in XP?

Go to START | CONTROL PANEL | NETWORK CONNECTIONS

You should see an icon for your local area connection. RIGHT CLICK on that connection and select PROPERTIES. Go to the INTERNET PROTOCOL (TCP/IP) and click PROPERTIES button. Select the radio button that says "use the following IP address" and use 10.0.0.25, 255.255.255.0, 10.0.0.1 then click the "use the following DNS server addresses" and enter 10.0.0.1 for both of them. Select OK then OK again and then see if you can get to the Internet.

Wait why am I changing the comp with xp & a wireless adapter that works just fine? It the one with Vista & trying to plug into the router that isn't working? Its like the Vista has somehow kicked something out or something cause it won't even go straight from the modem into it, bypassing the router keeps saying only local area connection available, but no internet.

Sorry, I just want to make sure before I go changing things & screw it all up & can't even ask everyone for help.

I am asking for you to change the settings on the computer that does not work. The one where you did an IPCONFIG /ALL and got an IP address of
    169.254.130.109.

sorry ended up giving up last night. gonna try some of the things today hopefully it works.

and is it the same process that I'm doing since the comp with the problem is actually vista not an XP. all the comps that work are on xp, and the one that has a problem is the vista one of course

  15. datboytaz

    datboytaz Private E-2

do I go to the tcp/ip v4 or tcp/ip v6, have 2 of them on vista
ok on the first part you say "use 10.0.0.25" but the one on the comp that works doesn't have a 5 on the end. & then for the "use the following DNS server" you say use the same numbers for both, but vista is telling me that I can't use the same for both, have to be different. Can you help on this? Hopefuly you're not working. Sorry for the delay

and now its saying "can't ping the dns server" and asks me to repair it

    Sorry for the delay......

Yeah, it probably will not allow you to use the same DNS address twice. So only enter 10.0.0.1 once.

I don't understand how the 10.0.0.25 address can be used already, but try 10.0.0.126.

    Don't get frustrated......hang in there.

hey sorry for my delay now. should I be doing it in the tcp/ipv4 or the one with v6 at the end? some reason the vista has them both but xp only has the v4 one. and i had screwed up the 25 part, only had the 2 in there not the 25. restarting it now to see what happens. it has to be a setting on the comp cause I even moved the router & modem to my XP comp & worked no problem. Can't get any kind of signal into the vista comp whether wired right to the modem, wired into the router or witha wireless usb adapter. Thanks for all the help though hopefully can get it right

ok I put the settings on the vista to the 10.0.0.25 with only one dns server and now its making the firewall on my xp go nuts saying its "blocked internet access to your computer (NetBIOS Session) from 10.0.0.25 (TCP Post 49161) [TCP Flags: S]..... should I make my firewall allow it to go?

hey sorry got a freakin comcast guy here now working on it. I'm sure he's not gonna get anything done & I'll have to retry everything but I'll get back to ya in a few. LMK if using an IM service might be a lil easier than this way if possible. Thnaks again for all your help tho

alright sorry about that. well after an hour they didn't get anything corrected except redo the network and make it password protected. So still can't get on the vista comp but have no problems with the 2 XP comps. They said it has something to do with that comp because they had the modem & router plugged into thier own laptop & was working just fine thru the wired connection. So what do I do now, restart over & find out the new IP address or whatever cause they set them back to "find IP addy auto"

  25. jconstan

    jconstan MajorGeek

OK...in a nutshell your machine will NEVER work with an IP address of 169.254.130.109 as you had indicated. All my instructions were trying to accomplish is giving your machine a VALID network address on your specific network. I do not understand why you are not getting a VALID ip address from the DHCP as the other machines are getting. So, to eliminate the DHCP scenario I wanted to manually configure the IP settings to see what we can come up with.

You will need to go back and set up your network card they way we discussed previously.

Oh...and swap the network cable with one of the working machines.

  26. datboytaz

    datboytaz Private E-2

ok. sorry had forgot to say that he said it was recognizing the routers IP & the cables were swapped with brand new ones. Said it has something to do with the comp not them.

The new IP info for the vista (still doesn't connect to internet) is :

    192.168.1.4
    255.255.255.0
    192.168.1.1

And the one for the comp I'm on now has changed (xp one) to:

    192.168.1.3

the rest the same. figured you should know that before we go on so go the right way.

  27. jconstan

    jconstan MajorGeek

    OK....back to square 1.

It appears that your addresses changed from 10.0.0.0 to 192.168.1.0. No big deal.

It appears that your troubled machine now has a good ip address on your network 192.168.1.4.

What do you get when you ping 192.168.1.1?
What do you get when you ping www.microsoft.com?

  28. datboytaz

    datboytaz Private E-2

sorry not that advanced. i know what u mean but not sure on how to do it

  29. datboytaz

    datboytaz Private E-2

sorry I'm an idiot. just did it and came back with this :

    Three seperate pings to 192.168.1.1
    Trans Failed Error 1231
Ping Status Packets Sent 4 Rcvd 0 Lost 4 100% loss

Then the ping to microsoft said can't be found check name try again

  30. jconstan

    jconstan MajorGeek

    Hummmm

OK, go into the network settings again and remove the TCP/IP for V6 line so you only have TCP/IP V4 left. Sometimes there is a little confusion between V4 and V6 settings.

Then try your ping test again.

hey sorry for the delay. had to go get the kids & forgot to hit post on the last message saying that. It already has the v6 turned off & still won't. When you tell vista to identify the problem its still saying to retry another IP or rebuild the adapter. I don't get it cause I've tried running both to fix & says it connected to the local network but not the internet, and still won't even if plugged right into the modem bypassing the router. its like there something wrong with the LAN driver or something. help me out asap plz. and this would be much easier thru an instant message service or something instead of waitng 5-10 minutes for one of us to reply. Please let me know what you want to do about that cause think this is starting to frustrate me as much as the internet not working

  32. jconstan

Well.......everything seems to point to the computer. My next suggestion is to go to the Device Manager and removed the network card and reboot. When the system come back up it will find the network card and re-install all the drivers. In my mind, there has to be something wrong with the network card configuration.

Open Device Manager by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Device Manager.* Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

ok I did that and it still doesn't do anything. It finds the Local network no problem, it just isn't getting on the internet. No matter what. I plug in the modem directly takes a moment, indentifies the local network, but no internet signal? Or even if I try to run thru the router same thing. The thing I really don't understand is that even though I instal a wireless USB adapter that I use on the other comps, it should bypass everything and work but it doesn't. What the heck can be the problem? do I contact Dell's sorry tech? Do I contact Microsoft & their sorry Tech? or do I nVidia who should stick to graphics it seems to me? Or can we get this figured out. send me a message on AIM at the same name plz. or I can use gtalk, yahoo, something other than this plz

It would seem that there is no problem with the hardware because you can communicate with the local network. It would appear that it is the Vista network setup that is at issue. I would suggest that you follow the instruction provided here for setting up a network in Vista. And here.

I think the suggestion was that you change your DNS server settings manually to those supplied by OpenDNS = Server #1 "208.67.222.222", server #2 "208.67.220.220".

I had a problem connecting to the internet on my dell laptop even though it was connected to the netgear router. From netgear support, I did the start/run/ and typed in services command, have to get it from netgear, then start it as it is stopped every time I boot up.....then have windows configure this connection.... I have to get this command again and write it down.....but it worked....

Dell defaults to their utility, so if you start/run/services.msc and scroll down to zero config utility, double click on it (3rd from bottom), u can start it up as it is probably stopped, click ok. rt click on wireless networks, and then make sure your network is there and connected. if you click on properties and then wireless network, use windows to configure my wireless network settings, remove all preferred networks, and click ok. it'll find your network automatically if you have the "automatically find" setting on tcpip on general tab after double clicking on tcpip. This will have to be done every time you turn on your dell which is a pain. You'll have to contact dell to permanently disable the dell wireless utility....?????
