Can't connect to internet

I've just built a brand new computer and installed Windows XP Pro with SP2 but I can't connect to the internet. My old computer could connect fine (using the same connection) but with my new one it says it's connected but yet can't access the internet. I tried reparing it but it comes up with a message saying "Failed to query TCP/IP settings of the connection. Cannot proceed."

IP settings etc. come up as blank but I have the automatically detect settings selected (by default). I've seen some other posts by people with the same problem except mine's different because everything thing is from scratch so it's not due to spyware or changed settings I can restore to.

My connection is through a family-shared router but I can't imagine the problem being there as I had wiped my old computer and re-installed windows and it's still worked on there, so I'm guessing I just need to configure the new PC somehow?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure you have drivers for your network card installed. Firewire (IEEE 1394) ports will automatically create a "network connection" (for historic reasons) but that connection is completely different than the LAN connection you want to use. If it's a brand new computer, it's extremely likely that Windows XP SP2 doesn't have a network driver available.

Run "devmgmt.msc" and look for unknown devices, devices with a yellow "!" or red "X", and look at the listed Network Adapters. If you can't seem to figure out what a device is, you can use Lavalys's Everest to scan your hardware. You can then get drivers for missing devices.

You'll have to use a USB stick to get the drivers on the PC, of course.

Thanks a bunch, managed to download the drivers and now the internet's working (The drivers for the network card was already installed but had to install drivers for one of the ethernet ports/controllers), though device manager still shows another ethernet controller with a yellow "!" which there didn't seem to be drivers for and SM bus controller which also has a yellow "!" but I've got no idea what that is?

Also two unrelated questions if you happen to know the answers, but when I plugged the USB stick in the 'what would you like to do?' pop up didn't show so was wondering if there's a setting for that somewhere to enable it? And on my old computer I managed to set windows not to bother with the welcome screen and just log me right in (as I was the only user), but I can't for the life of me remember how to do it again as there's no obvious setting in the user accounts. All it seems to let me do is show the old fashioned log in screen instead which is just as pointless and as annoying because you have to click. Know how to get rid of it by any chance?

Either way thanks again for helping me sort out the bigger problem.

hmm.. i know theres a setting in the windows group policy that will disable the welcome screen.. may want to look in the user account preferences again.. i think i recall seeing something to the effect of change the way users login... if not you can do a windows key+r and type in mmc.. then go to file and click add/remove snap ins.. from there click add and click on the group policy editor.. then click ok.. from there im afraid all i can tell you to do is expand all the subdirectories and look for one that says to the effect of disable welcome screen as i forget exactly ewhere it is...

hope that helps out some... if not then tell me and ill never help anyone again.. lol jk xP

I checked there and found an option to add scripts to the log on/log off functions. While trying to look for the scripts I found another, simpler way of disabling it but thanks anyway for trying to help. Might not of found it otherwise =)

Taken from the site that I found it on:

    1) Click on Run
    2) Type in the following command and click OK

    control userpasswords2

    3) Highlight the user you want to log into automatically, then uncheck the box for

"Users must enter a username and password to use this computer"

    4) Click on Apply and you'll be asked to verify the username and password to log in automatically
    5) Click OK and the next time you restart your computer, you'll automatically be logged in without having the classic prompt or Welcome Screen.

Hope that helps, it worked for me just fine =)

As for my other problem I found if you right click on the USB pen when it's in the drive and then go on the Autoplay tab, you can choose the settings from there. Though for some reason it still won't work with the USB pen I'm using but that's probably because it's an extremely cheap Kingston one, haha.

No problem and thanks. I might not be as much of a geek as I wish to be but maybe someday. Maybe someday I'm sure we both will be haha =)

Also a note: If you disconnect your modem and reconnect to another computer, make sure you reset the modem. Otherwise, it will connect to the modem, but the registered IP address on the modem will not match the one on the computer (i believe that is why. If 'm wrong, somone please correct me)

no i dont think so.. i mean maybe im wrong.. but i used to take my dsl modem between my computer and my brothers all the time and never had to reset it.. though unplugging it from may be an automatic reset.. maybe... not sure if thats what you meant or if you meant just unplugging the ethernet cable... lol

    anyone know?
