Can't copy files over 600MB from CD

    Hi there,

When I try to copy or read files from CD that's over 600MB's (about 600 anyways...) the only thing I get is a CRC error. It's starting OK and it copies for about 20 seconds but then the cdrom slows down and after another minute or so I get a CRC error.

I belived it to be the cdrom (It's actually a CDRW) so I downloaded newer firmware and upgraded successfully, but this didn't help. Then I checked cables and I use only 80 pin connectors, no problem in finding the drive in BIOS, master/slave is correct, there just isn't a problem hardware-wise.

After a lot of researching I found something about Explorer not being able to handle large files historically. Don't know if that's the case today, but it sure seems to be. Actually when I reinstalled the system a time ago the problem disappeared but then it came back again after some time. When I think about it I belive the problem came back when I installed the XP fixes from windowsupdate.com. It was around the same time anyway.

Has anyone heard of this before? Is it one of the fixes and if so, which one? Or is there another solution to this?

A friend of mine verified my software-suspicion when he encountered the exact same problem, and that also disappeared with the reinstallation of Windows.

    Thanks!

    Check this:
    1. Go to the control panel and double click on the System Icon which brings up the system properties window
    2. At the top select the hardware tab and then click on the device manager button which brings up the device manager window
    3. Click on the "+" sign next to the Icon labeled
      "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers"
    4. Double click on the icon labeled "secondary IDE Channel" (or primary if that's where the CD is) which brings up the IDE channel properties window
    5. Click on the Advanced settings tab at the top
    6. For Devices 0 and 1 make sure the transfer mode is set to "DMA if available" and then click on OK (see below)
    7. Click on OK again to close the System properties window

Thanks, already on 'DMA if available'. Any other ideas?

Bad file, bad media, bad hardware, CD burned on a drive higher in speed than yours will read at? Tried the same disk and file transfer on another machine?

Bad file - Files are OK before burned, as it mostly happens with movie files I usually watch them before deciding to save them.

Bad media - It happens on all cd's I have, and that's a lot. I'd guess I've tried about 50 of them though, all together. CD's are burned with the same recorder as I'm trying to copy from.

Bad hardware - Thought that at first but all cd's I have does work in a number of other computers. I have tried my cdrom in another computer and that works perfectly, even with the same cd's that's the problem on my own system.

And, as I mentioned earlier: 'A friend of mine verified my software-suspicion when he encountered the exact same problem, and that also disappeared with the reinstallation of Windows'.

Also got a tip from a friend that it could be the memory being damaged so I swapped memory sticks but there's no difference.

    That give you any ideas?

I've never experienced or heard of a problem with copying large files.

CRC errors are generally indications of damaged media. I'd find and download Nero CD/DVD Speed. Install it, then go Extras --> Scandisc.

To ensure that the drive itself is not bad, I'd try different discs in addition to scanning the suspect one.

If you find error, reburn the CD. This time, set the speed to one-half the rated speed of the media or one-half the speed of the CD burner, whichever is less. (That is, if you have a 32X burner and 48X media, burn at 12X or 16X.)

I'm moving this thread over to hardware section... maybe there's a couple of things needed to go through.
