I have a file folder on my desktop that I can't remove... I've deleted all the files, it says it's in use by another program, is there a program that can remove this file?

    Hi!
What program/application was this file folder associated with?

none, it was a file directly on the desktop... it had .doc files in it, I just moved them over to my documents and settings... nothing special.. It's called "new folder 4"

Most of the time I've seen this problem it has been caused by one of a few things. I'm assuming you have Admin rights and you're on Win XP Pro here, although 2000 and XP Home should be nearly identical.

The first thing is that the disk file system is corrupted. Open up a command prompt and run:
    chkdsk c: /f

Substitute whatever drive letter is appropriate for "c:" if you need to. If it asks if you want to do a scan on reboot answer yes, and then restart your PC. The scan should take 5-10 minutes at most. After the system reboots, try deleting the folder again.

If that doesn't work, then download PendMoves. Extract the contents to a folder, open up a command prompt, and cd to that directory. Now run:
    movefile "dir-to-delete" ""

Substitute the path to the directory you want to nuke for dir-to-delete, but be sure to encolse the path in quotes if it has spaces. Now run:
    pendmoves

You should see the directory listed as one to be deleted. Reboot your system and it should be gone.

Options to delete this errant file, which seems to be locked by some app are....

    1. Pocket Killbox
    2. MoveOnBoot this one, once you dragNdrop the file or browse for its location, deletes the file on reboot, so any applications that have locked the file are not running so cannot lock it before deletion.. my fav!
    3. Unlocker This should also unlock and allow you to delete without the need for re-booting.

Do you have Delete permissions on the directory?
