Can't delete files from my desktop or Windows Explorer.

When I try to delete a file from my Desktop or from Windows Explorer, I get an error message that reads:

Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

It also gives me the option to Send Error Report or Don't Send. I usually click "Don't Send", then my Taskbar disappears momentarily and many times my background also disappears and I have to click "Restore Active Desktop" for the original background to return.

However, if I am in Safe Mode I have no problems deleting any files from the desktop or explorer.

This issue isn't that big a deal since I can delete the files from Safe Mode at any time, but it can get a little irritating, so if anyone can help me out I'd really appreciate it.

(I've attached my AIDA32 log with my system info)

    Thanks!

Have you tried doing a restore ... back to before you started having this problem?

No I haven't. But before I had this problem I had some malware issues that this site helped me eliminate. If I do a restore from a point before this problem will the malware and spyware come back? If not, how do I do a restore?

    Thanks!

If you did as directed in the malware section .... which asked you to turn off system restore while you cleaned the system of malware.... then you should be safe to restore to the point after you cleaned your system .... depending on how long ago that was. I would look for a point to restore that was slightly before your current problems started, but a while after you cleaned your system.
To restore, go to accessories, system tools, restore.
First run ad-aware to make sure things are clean.
Check your virus logs to be sure it hasn't picked up something that it couldn't delete.
Put your xp cd in the drive and exit when it starts up.... then go to start/run and type "sfc /scannow" (without the qoutes..note the space between the c /).
If all that doesn't fix the problem .... do a restore.
If that doesn't work, we can talk about a repair installation.

Unfortunately, I was having this problem at the same time I was having the malware problems. I actually thought it was the malware that was causing the windows explorer problem. But the malware is gone and the problem persists. I did turn off the system restore as directed after the malware was cleaned up, so I can't go to a point before that right?

If, after it was all cleaned up, you shut down, restarted, and then enabled system restore, that would be your first restore point ....depending on how long ago that was. I would just start restoring a little at a time ...i.e. go back to your best quess as to when the problems first started ...if that isn't working, go back a few more days.

The thing is that I had this problem before I disabled/enabled system restore.

How are you trying to delete these files, are you using the right-click function?

Do you have Spy Sweeper installed?

Could also try right click on start/explore/find the folder right click and delete....or file/delete.

I don't have Spy Sweeper installed, but I do have CounterSpy, Ad-aware, and Ccleaner.

I've tried the right-click function, I've tried highlighting the object then pressing "delete" on the keyboard, I've tried finding the file by right-clicking start, selecting explore, finding the file, then right-click/delete or file/delete, and I've even tried yelling at the computer!.....none of them work.

Yesterday I realized that I couldn't move files either. I created a folder, tried to move some files into it, but got the same error message and Windows Explorer closed. The strangest part is that when I'm in Safe Mode I have absolutely no issues.

Drivers don't load and some background processes don't run in safe mode ....so, try looking at your event viewer (control panel, administrative tools event viewer ...check both system and applications for error reports ....can do this in safe mode...report the errrors.

    Tim,
I had errors on both the Application and System logs. I attached them both, I don't know if that's any help, but I don't really know what they mean.

I also read the links.....the first one didn't sound like my situation, but the second one did. However, I don't have Service Pack 2 for my XP, I still have 1. If I update to SP2, will this problem go away?

You can click on any error and it will (should) give you a link to microsoft database for the problem ....some don't have a solution ...on that I looked at came back as a problem with Kodak easy share :
    http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=105&eventno=3304&source=dcfssvc&phase=1
And yes, SP2 might solve some of the problems.
But it looks like a lot of driver issues ...tedious, but you could open (ribht click on My Computer) go to device manager and check all the devices (yellow excalmation means its got a problem) expand all and make sure each devide is not showing any conflicts.
