Can't Delete Files!

Hey all, I am having a strange problem that I've never come across before. Maybe someone here can give me some insight. A few days ago someone on one of my boxes managed to infect it with some sort of spyware or virus. Trying to run Nod32 or the free Trend Micro online scanner wouldn't help, because the files couldn't be opened to be read in the first place.

They are htm files that reside in Docs & Settings\user\local settings\temp\temporary internet files

I have tried everything I can think of to get rid of these. Booting into safe mode did not work. I also tried bypassing the shell, starting up in safe mode with command prompt, to delete them by hand. Still, no luck. Any insight to this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Here are some quick system specs. P2 400mhz, 8 gig hd - ntfs format, Win2k Pro with newest updates, service packs, etc etc.

That's an odd location for temporary internet files...
So I'm assuming that:
You can delete other files in that directory
Dumping your temp internet files doesn't delete those files

Do you get an 'Access Denied' message when you try to delete them? I'd be interested to know what the NTFS permissions are and who has ownership of those files.

Usually we recommend a free command-line tool called DelLater for deleting stubborn files, but typing in those long filenames would be a drag, so KillBox is a utility you can use to browse to a file and kill it. By default it makes backups of what it deletes.

 

Thanks a lot! Killbox did the trick. And yes, I tried looking for processes to kill in the task manager to delete these things by hand. I saw nothing suspicious.
