Can't Delete MKV Files

I recently downloaded a set of MKV HD videos. They were laid out in "Episode" style folders, eight of them total. Folder 3-8 play fine. However, it seems videos in folder 1-2 are corrupt (won't play and there is no video info in the "Properties").

Simple solution is to just delete these two files but unfortunately Windows 7 gives me the "Can't Be Deleted Because File Is Open In Windows Explorer File Type MKV" message. Now, I know this is nothing new as I've seen other people have this issue with MKV files. I also know a common solution is to download "Unlocker" to delete it.

    My questions are two fold:

    1) How does a file like this, even though corrupt, get locked up in Windows in the first place? Seems strange I can't remove it some how using Safe Mode (which doesn't work, already tried).

    2) I like to keep things in-house as much as possible so is there a way to allow Windows to handle the removal of these files without downloading a 3rd party app like "Unlocker?"

    Thnx!

Basiculy sometimes when you click on those windows trys to preview them, which causes them to be in use. Sometimes a simple reboot is enough to delete them.

    Hi

I know you did not wish a 3rd party app suggestion.. but,

A reboot as Colemanguy mentions is a good option to allow the files to be de-listed with an application or explorer, but in some cases you may need a 3rd party application to allow you to remove the files, and MoveOnBoot is what I would use.

As I just wonder as you have already tried Safe Mode and that didn't work, that Windows Explorer has hold of these files as part of indexing, icon cache etc

Just a thought, do you have DivX player installed ?
A few months ago I had a similar problem with MKV files on a friends computer and tried all the above suggestions with no luck
It appears DivX was attaching itself to the files and not letting go so the solution was to totally uninstall DivX then reboot then computer then we were able to delete the files.

Another way is to use the Task Manager to kill the Explorer process, and then restart it.

Thanks, but I have tried both Safe Mode and killing the process. Also, I'm not opposed to using a 3rd party app to delete it, it just seems like there should be somehow to pinpoint in Windows what's locking it up in order to remove it on my own (I'm kind of a DIY guy :)).

My biggest thing is really trying to find what lead to this in the first place, which I know is a corrupt file, but why it's "stuck."

Try LockHunter it will add a context menu item: What is locking this?
