    I'm running Windows 2000 XP.
A few weeks ago something went crappers and my hubby did 'something' to the 'puter. I'm not sure what, I'm not sure he really is sure what he did. argh...
Anyway, after he did this I didn't lose anything that was already in there that I put in there but,.. I did have to figure out how I wanted my Yahoo to look again and I also need to reinstall my adobe.
But, before I do that I wanted to go ahead and do a 'DiskCleanup' and a Defrag.
I always do the cleanup first then the defrag.
But(again), I go to 'Start' then to 'All programs', 'Accessories', 'System Tools', and then to 'DiskCleanup'. I get the little window that is in the middle of the screen and it says..'Select Drive'. The default is Drive C. So I click on OK and it totally disappears. Just these last 3 or 4 times is when it has totally disappeared. The 7 or 8 times before that the screen would come up that shows how far it is coming along but it never moved anywhere. I've even left it there for hours and nothing moved.
Like I said, now when I click OK it goes ....gone.....poof.
I would really so awesomely appreciate any help I can get on this.
    Thanks in advance!!

gday adel have you ever done a disk scan for errors on your computer give this a try and see if it helps click on my computer then right click on your local disk c drive from the list choose properties when the properties box comes up at the top click on the tools tab then click on error check in the next box tick both boxes both find and fix errors then hit start you will then be prompted that the scan cannot be preformed and you will have to schedule for the next time you start the computer click yes then restart your computer let the scan run it will take sometime to complete when its complete try your disk cleanup again

    Hey there,

I know that it has been a loooong time since this problem for me has happened....but I have a few questions. .... If you don't mind answering them. ~~grin~~

When I do all things that I do what you've said to do....does that actually do a 'disk cleanup'? If not ...what does it do?

I wonder this because for some reason I am still not able to do a 'regular' disk cleanup. Could you hopefully tell me why I can't?

I've tried to do a 'regular' disk scan and .....bltttttttth....nothing works.
SO, after I've done the thing that you suggested...I do a 'defrag'. And that seems to work just fine.

Is there anything more that I can do to cleanup the temp.files or whatever kinda crud from my 'puter besides doing the two mentioned above?

And I gotta tell you that I really do appreciate the time and effort that you have taken to help me with this whole thing. We definitely need more people like you in the world for more than just 'puter stuff. thanks lots for your help!

    Hey Mark,
I have the CCleanup but when I did use it I wasn't sure if I was using it correctly...ok, I was scar-ed. Well, I went ahead and used it and it took care of allot of things that needed to be taken care of. Thanks! I guess I just needed the push that you gave me. Thanks again ~~~big smile~~~

Good advice about CC cleaner, an i love it although dont want to scare monger so be mindful of what you cleanup though, we recently had a tutor destroy a unit using this app.

Yep, I got my CCleaner from here. It all works very good. It's me that has the hang ups. haha
I've done everything that I've been prompted to do and all is working great with it. I just need to use it more often. ;0)
    Thanks Mark. ~smile~

I really do like CCleaner. It's one of those things that doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what to do. I am so paranoid about putting much of anything in the 'puter for the fact that 8 times out of 10 I have no clue what the heck I'm doing.
I DO know that I would be completely lost and more than likely computerless if it wasn't for all the kick-a$$ people here at Major Geeks. Seriously!

    Thanks for the help!

I am a real maniac for downloading free trial programs and then deleting them after playing for a while so i end up with a lot of rubbish on the PC.
I do have other progs for cleaning but you have to be careful with them.
CCleaner is one of the best and i have never had a problem with it,you just follow the instructions and it does the job for you in complete safety.

Hey there Bionic Belgian, (~~big smile~~, like the name)
Ya I like putting things in and kinda seeing what they look to be all about. Then I get totally scared and 'Remove Program' before I feel like I let too much in. But I know now that all it takes it to just let it touch the inside of my 'puter and it is soiled. Sometimes no matter how much 'cleanser' or 'removal' things I have .....it still leaves some kind of residue that is not pretty and needs to be cleaned up all the way. I'm sure you know what I mean, haha.
Would you please let me know some of the ones that you use to get rid of the stuff we don't like? I would be ever so grateful ~~big smile~~
I use CCleaner and I am so glad that I do, now that I know that so many people think so much of it. I wonder a bit about 'Registry Cleaning'? I know that it has some kind of thing to do with it on the CCleaner . I am a novice about, well pretty much allot of these things. But, I am learning very fast. And I really appreciate all the info and sites that I get directed to go.
    Thank you much,
    adele

    Hi Adele
The name comes from the fact that i have a lot of metal inside my body after an accident.
The main one i use is Vista manager,it does just about everything i need and if you want to try it download it and have a fully working 15 daytest period (i have since bought it)

    http://www.yamicsoft.com/vistamanager/

if you are working with XP there is also a version for that with the same 15 day trial.

    http://www.yamicsoft.com/xpmanager/index.html

But the safest way to stop things getting into your PC untill you want it is to use Sandboxie and it's free here on MGs.
this allows you to open programs but blocks them from entering your HD,there is a full explanation on this page.
