Ok, I've posted this before but never got an answer. Whenever I download a file from Microsoft's website and try to install it, I get the following message:

    http://www.geocities.com/the_mztr/Error.JPG

I've discovered that if I manually go to the path shown on the error message while the error message is still on the screen, the temporary file is there and if I open it I can install the program. My question is why can't windows recognize that the file is there?

I am having trouble getting the same program to download but I don't get the error message that gives a path, it says no updates were installed.

I would also like to know why windows won't recognise the file?

System can't find the file because your temp directory is not listed in your path. That's why if you browse to it directly and run it, it can find it.

If you go to a commnad prompt and type "path" (without the quotes), you will see your current systems path.

It could also be caused by the temp directory specified being full of "temp" files. Sometimes cleaning out the temp directory before running the install, can sometimes correct.

They way you have done it is correct. I would recommend coping the files to a "working" or alternate temp directory, such as c:\temp

Just make sure the directory is clean before you copy stuff into it.

Try going to and download this program http://www.malwarebytes.org/ which is a free anti-malware program. When I downloaded and ran it with all the default settings, it found all kinds of problems which my AVG and SpyHunter programs didn't find. It cleared up the problem of not being able to download from Microsoft; always going to Google search or some random page when trying to search for microsoft fixes and not being able to create XP Restore points. Sure was great as I was about ready to reformat and reinstall. Also found another program to replace AVG which had been giving me some problems lately. That program is ThreatFire (also Free)http://www.threatfire.com/about/.

    Hope this helps.

RayB777 welcome but in the future, please don't drag up a thread from 2005 and offer a solution. Chances are the person asking for help has either found a solution in 3 years or is using a different computer.
There are many threads from late 2008 and 2009 that need attention. Feel free to add your advice to those.

And why would luckyvic be thankful for a resurrected discussion of a problem that's close to 4 years old? Do you have the same exact problem today? If so, starting a new topic would be the way to go.
