Can't download hijack this... done CWshredder etc

Hi,

I am trying to help my nephew, whose computer will not allow him to download the patch to his World of Warcraft game. I was able to download and run Trend Micro, and he had the Windows Defender on his computer already. I ran both, neither found anything.

I then was able to download and run the CoolShredder tool (sorry, can't remember the proper name) It also found nothing.

However, he has a bazillion processes running on his computer, some of which I recognize as useless and/or uneccesary, others I don't recognize and when I try to download hijackthis for him, I get the "...hijackthis has encountered an error and needs to close..." message. I have tried downloading it from multiple sites, but get the same result on all of them.

He had tried multiple times to download this patch when he had only a dial up connection. Today they had cable internet installed, but still couldn't install it.

I was eventually able to download his patch from a mirror site, but still cannot download hijackthis. When I was able to get the patch to download, it did so EXTREMELY slowly... like 400 kbs/second, whereas when the cable people were here they were able to download their program at 21 mbs/second.

It appears as though he has no antivirus software on his computer, and is only using a windows firewall.

I don't know what else to do for him, and I'd appreciate any assistance that can be offered. He's having video game withdrawal!

HI and Welcome to Majorgeeks!

I would run the below steps if you can on that PC, for most of the software that needs to be downloaded you may need to download it onto another PC then burn to CD or copy to USB. The majority of the early steps are cleanup routines and its possible one of these may allow the likes of Hijackthis to download or run....

Our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.

Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:

CounterSpy

AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy

Bitdefender - from step 6

Panda Scan - from step 6

runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat

newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat

HijackThis

NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!
