can't download windows updates

I just completed following the steps laid out for me by chaslang to rid my dreadfully slow computer of all malware. It's now as fast as the day we got it, but I have one last problem. I can't download windows updates.

The two updates it shows needed right now are the .NET Framework ver 1.1 Service Pack 1 and the Windows malicious software update.

It downloads them fine and initializes them, but when it comes to installing them it always says "fails".

After downloading .net framework 1.1 sp1, you should go back to windows update, to get the security patch for sp1 of net framwork 1.1.

If this also fails, to install, then we need to fix your windows update issue.

 

After downloading those updates, I went back and got the rest of the updates, including software and hardware updates. All worked fine and seems to be back on track.
