I have a AMD Atholn XP 3200+ 2.2Ghz with 2GB DDR 400 ram running XP PRO SP2 for some reason the U.S. Robotics 56K V.92 Internal Faxmodem PCI 5699B (Driver version 5.0.0.170) will not send a fax. It works great for connecting to the internet but thats all. A few months ago I called thier tech support line but they said that unless I was using the fax software that came with it they could not help me. I tried the Windows XP fax program and it did not work either. I like the software that came with my lexmark 5250 printer (lexmark fax sollutions software 0.1.35.2.) So I have an old winlucent modem to fax with. Is there a way to adjust the U.S. robotics modem so I can connect to the internet and send faxes with it also? I really would like use the pci slot for somthing else. confused:

Sending a fax using a USR modem essentially involves sending a document to a "software printer". This would be listed with any normals printers under Control Panel>Printers. So do you have a printer there that is called something like Symantec Fax Starter Edition. This is what I use and I have a USR modem from which I can send faxes.

    Have you read this? http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/crawford_02october21.mspx

I have my lexmark 5200 series and lexmark fax in the printers and faxes screen. I can fax but only with the winlucent modem. It is an old modem and I have no free Pci slots left. Is there a way to configure the U.S. robotics modem to do both? I know there are a bunch of setting you can change on it but I don't know what they do. The only fax software on my machine is the lexmark I like the way it works with my scanner/printer and don't want to switch to something else.

One time I got it to send a fax so I know there is a way. Most of the time they get to about 70-95% and fail. Anyone know how to adjust a modem? I really expected more from tech support at U.S. Robotics.

You have to configure the FAX software (ie Microsoft FAX), which device to monitor. Some FAX modems are Software type FAX modems, which means they need the device manufacturers software in order to send and receive faxes properly.

As for USR support, that is pretty much nil, due to corps. use Fax servers that use different hardware and software that the average consumer uses nowdays.
