i have a gaming computer with a 120 mm fan pulling air in from the front 2 80 mm fans pulling air out 1 80 mm fan on the side to pull off the heatsink and a 90 or 100 mm fan on the bottom side of the heatsink to pull warm/ hot air off it. i also have a speed control on the fan attached to the heatsink to speed it up or slow it down. i was wondering would it be insufficent power supply by chance producing to much heat and it's throwing it onto the cpu heatsink and causing the cpu to then overheat? when when i start the computer up i feel all around the inside where air flow is and the only spot that seems to be warm right away is at the top of the cpu heatsink nearest the power supply. it feels like it's coming off the ps but i can't be 100% on that already i was going to buy a new 80 mm fan to put over the top of the heat sink and have the air flow through the cpu heatsink itself. i was wondering would that be enough to keep it cool and keep it from over heating all the time and slowing my processes down and causing my computer to slow and lag and not be able to shut down or respond for about 5 minutes

Unless I'm misunderstanding you, it seems as if you don't have a fan on the CPU heat sink now. Is this correct? Jeez, I hope not! Why on earth would you run a CPU without a fan on the heat sink? Very few CPU heatsinks come w/o fans preinstalled, even really old Pentium 1 chips have fans. You can have all the case fans in the world, but if you don't have one fastened to the top of the CPU heat sink blowing down onto it, you're going to have thermal issues. I have a front fan blowing in, a side fan blowing in, a hard drive cooling kit in one of the CD bays with two small 32mm fans blowing in, a slot fan blowing out (right next to the video card) and another 120mm case fan blowing out right behind the CPU. This is in addition to the power supply which has a 120mm fan also blowing out. The way the fans are set up creates a great flow of air through the case. Combined, the 3 exhaust fans move over 70cf of air per minute. The case has less than 5cf of air volume, which means that the entire volume of air in the case is completely replaced at least 12 times per minute. Because more air is flowing out of the case than is being blown into the case essentially creates lower air pressure in the case -in essence a vacuum- so fresh cool air is constantly flowing into the case in an attempt to equalize the air pressure outside and inside the case.

No no no i do have a 90 mm fan on the heat sink. but the person who has it i think has it on backwards. the air is blowing away from the heatsink not into it. and it's on the bottom side by the graphics card so any air on the top side of the heatsink coming from the ps is getting blowen onto the graphics card and through the cpu heatsink. and three 80 mm fan's pulling air out of the computer and one 120 mm blowing air in

actually i figured it out there was two hard drives in there one that didn't know about a larger one a 120 gig hdd and it was set as a master drive with the 3 DVD drives. and didn't work well it was trying to load off both hdd's and slowed it down dramitically. so i unplugged the 120 gig hdd cuz who ever had it before me didn't really know what they were thinking obviously. and it was only used to store music and movies. so everything is alright now Thanks for the help though!
