Sorry for the long post, thought I'd explain as best as I can.

About a week ago Internet Explorer stopped accessing some sites. When I try to go to some sites, It just comes up a white screen and says Done at the bottom left hand corner. As if the page has loaded.
I don't get any error messages at all.
I can access these sites in Firefox and heck I can even access these sites in Internet Explorer while in Safe Mode.

I've been browsing forums since then trying to find the answer but nothing has worked yet.

    Here's what I've tried:

    Emptied Temp,Temporary Internet Folder,Cookies,History & Preftech Folders.

    Spybot Search and Destroy.
    Ad-Aware.
    Avast AntiVirus.
    Trend Micro House call.
    Trend Micro Spyware Scan.
    SpywareBlaster.
    CWShredder.
    Bit Defender.
    Ewido Anti-Malware.

    Set IE to default settings.
    Fixed Winsock.
    Re-Installed IE via IEFix.
    Repaired IE via Start/Run/sfc /scannow
    Checked Restricted Sites in IE.
Added sites to Trusted Sites in IE.
Done all the fixes on Microsoft website.

Various Security settings(java/activex etc) in IE suggested by other people.
(I always reset them back again as soon as I noticed they didn't work)

Checked the Hosts file in Windows.

    Using Start/Run/ (ran these commands)

    REGSVR32 urlmon.dll

    REGSVR32 Shdocvw.dll

    REGSVR32 Msjava.dll

    REGSVR32 Actxprxy.dll

    REGSVR32 Cryptdlg.dll

    REGSVR32 Oleaut32.dll

    REGSVR32 Mshtml.dll

    REGSVR32 Browseui.dll

    REGSVR32 Shell32.dll

All commands succeeded but still had no effect.

I recently added a Guestbook to my own site (from Bravenet) and I can't access it in IE.
I can access it in Firefox and again I can access it with IE in Safe Mode, lol weird.

Just for the record I'm using Win XP Pro Version 2002 Service Pack 1 Fully Updated.

    IE Version 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.050301-1526
    Cipher Strength: 128 bit
    Update Versions: SP1

    The Basics of my PC are:-Gigabyte GA-8IPE 1000 Pro2 Mobo, Pentium4 2.66, 512mb Kingsmax PC2700 DDR Ram, PNY GeForce FX5700 Ultra, Sounblaster Live 24-Bit, Pioneer 107d DVD-RW, Linksys WRT54G Router, Broadband 4mb Connection.(uk Telewest,Blueyonder.)

Can anyone suggest anything else I can try to resolve this problem.
I know I can just use Firefox but that would be just sweeping the problem under the carpet.
I'd rather know why this was happening in the first place.

Any Help Much Appreciated, Ronnie Mckell.

I had a similar issue a while ago with my previous XP build. Does it give a blank screen on the Windows Update site, by chance? I use Firefox 99% of the time but of course used IE for the updates, and it would just show a white page with "done" at the bottom. If I went to "view"->"source" in the top toolbar, I could see all the page text, and could also see where it was telling me I was "using a browser that didn't support active X, or frames". I tried most of the same stuff as you to get it going...never thought to try it in safe mode though.

I never did get it going, as I ended up getting a new HDD & reinstalling. However, I suspect it was a botched removal of Norton Systemworks 2005, as it still showed "Norton Worm Protection" as my firewall, even though it was fully uninstalled & the registry cleaned up with Registry Mechanic.

Try the steps below, you have done some of them but I would do them over just to be sure you cover the most common fixes. Good luck.

Hi Wavetar, I don't get it on windows update site but it sounds the exact same problem as you had.
When viewing the source code I can see some but not all of it.
Every site I find now with the white screen I'll be looking at the source code for clues.
Some of the pages on this site where getting the white screen syndrome, especially the download section for some reason.
I keep forgeting to open firefox instead of IE lol.Should make it default browser I guess.

Was thinking of doing a Windows repair. But then again it's only Internet Explorer is it, maybe it's time to fully convert to Firefox.:D
I'm still going to hunt down a fix for this problem though, Its getting the better of me now lol.

Hi Matacumbie, I followed your instructions.
The only thing that was different was 13. Click the Privacy tab, and click Default button.(The Default button was greyed out.)

There is a slight change now, Instead of a plain white page it says either Action Canceled or The Page Cannot Be Displayed.
They are still available in Firefox though.

It's strange how it just started happening, I can usually fix these things myself by just browsing different forums to find the answer but this one has really got me, lol.

Thanks for your help though m8.

    Ronnie.

    Ronnie,

Everytime I have seen Action Cancelled (twice) it's the Hosts file. What do you mean when you say you checked it?

Hi Steve, by checking I mean I looked inside it for entries refering to sites I couldn't access in IE.
    I never found anything.

The Hosts file was full the other day, but then I ran KazaaBeGone and it seemed to empty it.
By empty I mean here's how it looks now.

    # Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
    #
    # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
    #
    # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
    # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
    # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
    # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
    # space.
    #
    # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
    # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
    #
    # For example:
    #
    # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
    # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

    127.0.0.1 localhost

This was full of lots of entries, something to do with Kazaa Supertrick I think.

    Ronnie.

You can try the steps below, not definitely sure it will solve the problem but I would try it.

    Rename and Replace HOSTS file:

    1. Open Windows Explorer.

    2. Find this file: C:\Windows\system32\Drivers\ETC\HOSTS file

    3. Rename the file HOSTS to HOSTS.OLD. (a fresh new HOSTS file will be created when you restart Windows). Later you can delete the HOSTS.OLD

    4. Restart your computer.

Hi Steve, renamed the Hosts file then restarted PC but same old thing still happening.

It's strange though eh, some people with similar problems as mine get their's fixed by doing the same things as I have already done.

I've posted a Hijack This Log on CastleCops to see if someone will look at it to see if they can see anything wrong.

If you can think of anything else, I'm still willing to try to resolve this.

    Thanks, Ronnie.
