    Try this:

    1. Hit windows key + r (or click Start --> Run)
    2. Type 'devmgmt.msc' (without the quotes)
    3. Hit enter (or click 'OK')

Do you get the same error? If not, please follow the instructions in the malware removal thread. devmgmt.dll sounds like malware.

devmgr.dll is found in c:\windows\system32 in my PC.

    For missing dll's try

DLL missing? Search for them at. http://www.dll-files.com/

    Here's a nice .dll reference link, (from Star17—MG 74492) http://www.liutilities.com/products...pro/dlllibrary/
....and should you ever need a .dll accidently dumped, you can get it here:

As posted earlier devmgmt.msc runs Device manager.

Some google links for missing devmgr.dll.

    http://www.google.com/search?num=20...&cd=1&q=devmgr.dll+missing+OR+corrupt&spell=1

Hope these help. If not come back again. Bazza

    And one more method:
To reinstall the Microsoft Task Manager:

NOTE: You must be logged on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group in order to perform this procedure.

    1. Click Start , click Run , and then type the following command:

    %systemroot%\inf

NOTE : There are no spaces at all in the preceding command line.

    2. Click OK to open the INF folder.
    3. Locate the file mstask.inf

Right-click the file, and then click Install . This will reinstall the files that Search needs to proceed normally.

You will be asked to place your windows XP cd rom in the drive.

Thanks for all the ideas. I should also point out I've had other symptoms that I should have guessed might be related. My account settings in Thunderbird disappeared and all recent emails, and my windows background jpeg. I've also had the minimise, maximise, close icons disappearing from various programs. I also found I still had devmgr.dll but it would not work. I've also now added Spyware blaster, Spyware search & destroy and adaware to zone alarm and avg in my security arsenal.

I ran 'devmgmt.msc' and got the following - Snap in creation failed
    Name: Device Manager
    CLSID:{74246bfc-4c96-11do-abef-0020af6bob7a}

I also ran sfc /scannow . It asked for the WinXP disc, ran the task and exited.

I now have device manager back and possibly fixed some other things I didn't know were broken. Thanks for all the help. If any one can tell me what caused the problem I'd be interested.

    Si
