I know an info box is there that shows the speed because I've seen it before, but since then I've lost it and my shortcut to it.

On my XP I can find the speed by opening Task Manager>Networking and it shows up under Link Speed.

This is important to me as we have lousy underground phone lines which offer up varying connection speeds. I've found that if it doesn't connect at 40 kbps it's too slow to use and I immediately re-connect to get a faster connection.

Yeah, I know, "Hey, it's the 90's man! Get a faster ISP." But it's too rural here.

Actually, in the USA there are areas where the broadband ISPs refuse to pay money to help those who need it. My parents use Sat connection. I hate it when I go there. Better than dial-up, but not much better.

Anyway, I use a 3rd party software to get that info. It is called DU Meter.

It is not free, but, I paid for it, and I like it.

Btw, I'm also using windows 8 and I like it better than windows 7.

I know it's hard to find help in anything related to dial-up these days, so I wanted to let you know what I do in Win8. If you left-click on the network icon in the bottom right corner after you're connected, the purple network banner shows up. If you right-click on the dial-up network, it will have a "network status" button. If you click that, it will show you what speed you initially connected with (ie. 40kbs) and will also show you how long you have been connected.

If you want more detailed networking information, you can type CTRL + Shift+ Esc to bring up the taskbar, and then somewhere in there click another button to get more detailed information on system resources such as networking. Hope that helps.

It would be in the task manager. As for dial-up speeds, it would depend on your line quality, etc. It shows up as a PPPoE connection in Task Manager and network connections.

Win key & X to bring up a task window for stuff like command prompt, etc, or right click on task bar and choose Task manager.
8 is really no different than 7, when it comes down to ysing the desktop. The company that makes Start8, now has a utility that will run metro apps on the desktop.

As far as I am concerned, metro should be a choice, and desktop should be the main interface, due to it confuses many, having to remember different commands for both interfaces.
