Can't find the right driver

    Hello everyone,

Hi-Grade Laptop with Windows XP Professional; motherboard is 'Unknown' according to Everest...

I recently got a new computer for my university studies, but it came with Vista which I really didn't want so I reformatted for XP Professional. Everything works fine except now the computer has no sound.

I had a root around and it seems that all the audio drivers were fine except for IDT High Definition Audio CODEC which stated 'This device does not work (Code 10)'. I'm guessing that this driver only works for Vista. I've searched and searched until my eyes bled for another driver (the closest I got was Sigmatel High Definiton Audio CODEC but this turned out to be incompatible), but I've got nowhere. I study music so you can imagine my frustration that of all the things to not work, it would be the audio.

Can someone please help me with my problem?

    Thanks very much,

    Sirocco.

I don't like to sound so thick-skulled, but I guess I'll have to... how do I find the model/number?

If you bught it recently the model should be on your sale reciept.

If you don't have that turn your laptop over and there is a big lable on the bottom.
that will tell you what model it is.

I can't help with your issue as I found the same drivers as you did. There may be a driver available for XP, ask the maker of your system, which is quite new, meaning that they might not have written XP drivers especially for HD, and will never write XP drivers for the new hardware. I've seen people get lucky and others forced back to Vista because of it. Hey, Vista ain't that bad.:) It's not Linux.;) Good luck!

I just hope you didn't format the Vista recovery partition if Vista was preinstalled.

Thanks, it looks like going back to Vista might be my only option...

Who exactly should I ask? I'm not entirely sure who you mean by the 'makers of the system'. The laptop manufacturers or what? I've never been too up to speed on technical things.

Did you try installing KB888111? It's the hi-def audio update from Microsoft. You can download it from this direct link. Once it's downloaded, simply install it and reboot. If you don't have sound after installing it, uninstall your sound driver, reboot the PC, then re-install the sound driver.... hopefully it will work!
    Good luck!

    Thanks Augie and DLB
My next suggestion is this one" Realtek High Definition Audio 1.34:" from

    http://drivers.softpedia.com/progDownload/Realtek-High-Definition-Audio-Download-14716.html

and if all this fails (it should not) contact tech support here.

    http://www.higrade.com/nqcontent.cfm?a_id=2770

and explain your problem, they should be able to give you more help,if possible print out that specification page of your pc and you will have all the details they need.

Hello again, everyone, thanks for all your help. Still no sound though!

I tried installing KB888111 and a message box appeared telling me I didn't need to install it... I tried it anyway, but it didn't work.

I've then tried Realtek High Definition Audio 1.34 which hasn't appeared to do anything...

I'm right in thinking it should have worked after:

    • Extracting the files
    • Clicking setup.exe
    • Going through all that
    • Restarting

Right? Or should I be clicking something else too? Again, thanks for all your help.

OK next step we will try and make the PC do the work.

Click Start, click Run, and then type devmgmt.msc.
    then
Right-click My Computer, click Manage, and then click Device Manager.
Right-click My Computer, click Properties, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.

Double-click the type of device you want to update or change.
Right-click the specific device driver you want to update or change.
Click Update Driver to open the Hardware Update Wizard. Follow the wizard instructions.

In a flash of inspiration, have you used this version of XP pro before and dit it work OK.

Check to see if the audio is enabled in bios.

On bootup, hold down the DEL key or the F1 key and this will normally take you into the BIOS screen. BE DARN CAREFUL! Do not change any other settings except the one that say On-Board Audio. Default is usually "ON" Just change it from "OFF" to "DEFAULT" and this will enable the onboard audio. Now, you must also have the on-board audio drivers. If you know the motherboard manufacturer of the computer, you can usually identify the motherboard and download the audio drivers from the motherboard manufacturer site. If you don't know the audio drivers needed you have several other choices besides opening the computer and ID'ing the mb.

You need to SAVE the BIOS change, and exit and reboot the system.

You can wait until XP or Vista tells you what drivers it needs and then try to locate them on line.

You can go into device manager and look to see if there are any yellow question marks or red X's and click on them to see if device manager will tell you which drivers it needs.

If your computer came with a motherboard CD, the audio drivers should be on the disk.

    So take your pick.

The only driver with an exclamation mark next to it is IDT High Definition Audio CODEC (which has remained there stubbornly despite downloading the Realtek driver). If I try to update it I'm told that the wizard could not find a better match for the hardware than what I've got installed.

I've tried using the XP disc to get it to work but to no avail.

I got a horrible bleep the first time I opened BIOS so at least there is potential for sound! I couldn't see anything about on-board audio though.

How can I find out my motherboard's manufacturer?

OK there are a number of prog out there and maybe freebies but this one WILL give you the information you need.

this is not a freebie but you get a 15 day fully working trial ( i bought it for vista)

    http://yamicsoft.com/xpmanager/index.html

when you start it at the top left you will see system information click that and the first line will tell you your motherboard.

Now i am really stumped that prog has never failed before????

    OK go to this site

    http://www.higrade.com/nqcontent.cfm?a_id=827

Fill in the form with the details that you now have and in the box type a summary of the problem be sure to mention that you are looking for drivers for XP and if as i suspect non are available then you will have to reload Vista.
It's a very good OS,it just needs a new learning curve.

and while you wait for a reply let XP manager clean your system
