Can't get computer to stop resetting itself

Hey Guys,

My girlfriend's computer has been acting strange. Evrytime it boots up, when it starts loading stuff after windows is up, it restarts itself. If anyone could help me I could score a few brownie points. My guess was that something was telling it to restart during start up and it I could some how get rid of that in safe mode it would be fine. But how do you check what gets loaded during start up without having or being able to get Hijack This?

Any help would be nice.

if you can't get into safe mode, I would boot off the windows xp cd, and then repair your windows installation.

 

Sounds like she has MS blaster. MS patched it quite awhile ago, but it sounds like she hasn't patched for a long time, or never has patched (which is quite common with a gf's computer).

So really all you need to do is run windows update and get all the patches. So to do this simply boot into safe mode (press f5 wwhen turning the computer on). Once in safe mode go start run "msconfg" and then go to the startup tab. Just uncheck everything. If msblaster is on there you'll see something like dumpreg% or something close to that, really you only need to uncheck that, but to be on the safe side just disable everything in that menu as you don't need any of it to turn the computer on.

Once you've done that, just reboot like normal, and run windows update.

Also, I'm assuming the OS is either 2000 or XP, if it's 98/ME or lower don't disable everything in the startup tab. Some of that stuff is important.

Also once you're all done feel free to go back to the startup tab and recheck things you actually want to run at startup.
