okay so my friend has a huge problem with his desktop sony pc.
cant even get into safe mode or any sort of debugging or anything with the F8 feature...
    no diskette drive...only 2 cd-roms
he couldn't find his sony boot cd...so is there ANYTHING i can make on my computer onto a CD to help get his comp running or should he just take it back to $H** BUY...(damn that always happens...Best Buy) and let them take care of it, since his grandmother got him a warranty when she bought the computer...im hoping they dont have to do a clean reinstall because of the files on there...

in case you want to know, from safe mode, it loads up with the drivers and what not...but the last file that loads is all the partition jibberish, etc.etc c:\windows................\mup.sys

then it just loops back to the windows logo screen and back automatically to the safe mode menu...

according to them, they ran their spyware (eTrust) and AdAware and Spybot...regularly for the past 3 weeks when i went over to clean it up and setup these programs....thanks guys.

Can you make a boot disk on floppy somewhere with the same os as the afflicted box and then take that and burn to cd?

I'm not very proficient with this stuff and usually cause lots of trouble.

I generally start with resetting all the defaults in the bios (hit the delete key on boot).

You can do this with Nero Ultimate edition. Make a bootable floppy, then use nero to creat an image, then burn to cd (setting up the cd to act as a bootable floppy). I've done this multiple times.

Note: Been doing this, cause I'm finally getting tired of connecting a floppy drive to a computer with floppy drive.

how important is it that it be a "sony" bootable...meaning...
    i have win-xp pro...and they have xp-home.
    im assuming not much difference?
i basically told him to go back to the store and let them deal with it, since they got a warranty and it's only 2months old or just under anyway.

I may work well enough to get in and check things out. Be carefull on the warrantee thing, 'cause if he's not unconditionally covered, and it's a software glitch he could end up paying some big bucks when he picks it up.

well here's something interesting, at the store, they said that boot DISK/CD does not come with the computers anymore...you have to buy it apparently now...which i think is a load of BS...i mean wtf you paying for? a computer with an operating system....so, you SHOULD be able to get the windows disk that comes with the computer...errr or at least used to....talk about pinching every penny out of every customer...hence the name $hit Buy...to think i used to work for them...(at least i always told customers not to buy the warranties and instead buy it on their credit card, because the credit card company will match every product purchased on the card with up to a maximum of one year extra warranty...ie - computer comes with 1yr? you got coverage by the card company a 2nd year as well)
